'TIGRESS' Tailoring Project Roars Ahead, Empowers Women in Trivandrum

A three-month tailoring course under the banner TIGRESS has successfully equipped seven women with essential dressmaking skills while fostering a strong sense of solidarity and self-worth. The initiative, jointly organized by the Salesian Co-operators and Don Bosco Veedu, concluded with a certificate ceremony that celebrated both skill development and community empowerment.

The programme, whose name stands for Resilience and Empowerment, trained women in stitching a range of garments, including blouses, churidars, tops, and children's frocks. Of the ten women who enrolled, seven completed the whole course and were felicitated during a closing ceremony held on June 6.

"It was a great coming together for us," said Lali James, who also served as the course coordinator. "We picked up a new skill, learned to stitch various types of garments, and built strong bonds with one another."

Fr. Jiji Kalavanal, Rector of Don Bosco Veedu, explained the spirit behind the name. "TIGRESS is a powerful name for a women's empowerment initiative. Like a tigress, a woman is both fierce and protective, especially when it comes to her family and children. Financial independence gives her the strength to stand tall."

The programme's impact is beyond the classroom. Inspired by the success of the pilot batch, new applicants have enrolled for the next training session scheduled to begin at the end of this month.

Organizers say the programme not only promotes self-reliance but also reinforces the Salesian commitment to uplift marginalized communities through education and empowerment.
