With deep sorrow the Salesian Province of Chennai (INM) announces the passing away of Father Basil Thornaplackal (86 years), at 9.15 a.m. today (18th May 2018), at the Provincial House, Chennai. The funeral will take place tomorrow (19th May) at 3.30 p.m. at Don Bosco, Tirupattur.

With deep sorrow, the Salesian Province of Chennai announces the passing away of our dear confrere Father Stanislaus Fernandez, 85 years, early morning on 19 January 2018 at Don Bosco, Aluva, Kerala. He was a Salesian for 64 years and a priest for 55 years. His funeral services will be held at Don Bosco, Tirupattur, on Saturday, 20th January 2018 at 3 p.m.

A nine-day Youth Ministry Exposure camp was held in Chennai, May 1-9, 2017 for the students of Philosophy from Salesian College, Yercaud. The course was organized by the Don Bosco Youth Empowerment Services (DBYES) under the leadership of Fr. Mani Lazar, the Provincial Youth Director. Every day, after well-planned Input sessions at the Citadel, the participants were sent to different youth centres, oratories and parishes in Chennai for hands-on training and field experience with youth groups.

For the 88 youngsters from the Salesian provinces of Chennai and Tiruchy who gathered at a camp site tucked away on Yellagiri Hills at an altitude of 3500 feet to celebrate ``Youth Pasch 2017`` from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday (13-16 April), it was an unforgettable mountain-top experience of spiritual rejuvenation and re-commitment to the Lord.

Father Jose Kochamkunnel SDB was installed as the 14th Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai on 2 February during the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Father Maria Arokiam Kanaga, the General Councillor for the region of South Asia, in the presence of a large gathering which included some 300 Salesians and members of the Salesian Family at the Provincial House in Chennai.

The Salesian Province of Chennai deeply mourns the sad demise of Brother Dennis Cutinha who passed away on 4 January 2017 at Dominic Savio, Tirupattur. He was 72 years old and a Salesian for thirty three years. The funeral services will take place at 4 p.m. on Thursday, 5 January, at Don Bosco, Tirupattur.

Six seminarians of the Chennai Salesian Province were ordained priests on Tuesday 27 December 2016, at St. Francis Xavier's Church, Broadway, Chennai, by the Most Rev. Dr. George Antonysamy DD, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore. Joining the Bishop in the moving two-and-a-half-hour long ceremony were some 120 priests, scores of religious and thousands of people, including parents and relatives of the newly ordained.

The Rector Major of the Salesians, Father Angel Fernandez Artime, has appointed Father Jose Kochamkunnel SDB (K. M. Jose) as the new Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai for the years 2017-2023. Father Jose succeeds Father Jayapalan Raphael who will complete his term next month. The installation of the new Provincial will be held on 2 Feb 2017.

The Province of Chennai celebrated the International Disability Day, 3rd December, with a grand Short Film Festival dedicated to people with disabilities. The festival named ``Thiran`` (ability) 2016 saw 163 entries of which 25 ``best films`` were shortlisted by the jury for screening and 15 were selected for awards under various categories. Over 1000 participants, including 700 persons with disabilities, took part in the event held at Don Bosco Auditorium at Egmore on 27 November.

"Youth Awake 2016" came to a grand finale on 20th November 2016, with a day-long retreat at Lourdes' Shrine, Perambur, Chennai. ``Youth Awake`` was one of the creative responses of the youth of Chennai to make the Year of Mercy a meaningful experience in their life. It consisted of youngsters from various Salesian parishes and institutions in Chennai who voluntarily came together every month for a night vigil of prayer and reflection on the theme of the Year of Mercy.

A book titled `God`s Mercy and Justice - A Reading from Theological Perspectives` was released on 15 November at Lourdes Shrine, Madurai, by Father Angel Fernandez, Superior General of the Salesians of Don Bosco. It is a collection of eight scholarly articles by professors of Don Bosco Theological Centre, Kavarapettai, (Tamil Nadu).
