His doctoral thesis ``The Ethics of Human Enhancement: A Critical Assessment of the Pursuit of Perfection,`` at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium in the presence of his professors, Salesian confreres, friends and well-wishers. The academic Jury comprising Prof. Dr. S. Cuypers (president of the Jury), Prof. Dr. A. Vandevelde (Supervisor), Prof. Dr. Y. Denier (Co-Supervisor), Prof. Dr. D. Meacham (University of the West of England, Bristol), and Prof. Dr. A. De Block (Secretary of the Jury) proudly announced Father Arnald Mahesh, Doctor of Philosophy after the defense that lasted for about two hours. After four years of intense study, research and reflection at the Institute of Philosophy at KU Leuven, Father Mahesh reached this proud moment of making a valuable intellectual contribution in the field of philosophical ethics. The aim of the research work of Father Mahesh was to ethically investigate the pursuit of human enhancement- bringing to the fore the ethical complexity of this modern biomedical technology - with a view to determining its ethical viability, desirability, and necessity in the global context. He stresses that the Treatment-Enhancement distinction has an inevitable role to play in the moral evaluation of human enhancement. Further, his research highlights the moral values endangered by the pursuit of human enhancement, whether the noble purpose of medicine can be extended by way of using it for other than meeting the triple goals of medicine, namely, prevention, cure and care and whether the state can legitimately advocate a human enhancement enterprise. He does this by investigating the three prominent approaches from the mainstream debate on human enhancement, namely, Julian Savulescu`s Welfarist Approach, Allen Buchanan`s Development Approach, and Michael J. Sandel`s Giftedness Approach. We congratulate and wish Father Mahesh, as he returns to the province every success in the apostolic mission that await him.
