Salesians Engage in 'Community Audit' to Drive Mission Poverty Eradication
The Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) have completed a region-wide Community Audit as part of their flagship initiative, Mission Poverty Eradication (MPE). On 15 November 2025, designated by the Salesian Provincial Conference of South Asia (SPCSA) as a day of reflection, more than 427 communities across India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal paused to evaluate their service to the poorest and most vulnerable youth.
The Community Audit builds on the first year of MPE, which documented over 59,000 interventions aimed at transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth and families. Officially launched on August 5, 2024, by the Vicar of the Rector Major, MPE was born out of SPCSA’s response to the call of GC28 and the Rector Major to prioritize “the poorest, the most abandoned and defenceless.” The initiative also aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goal to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere.”
At the heart of the audit lies a simple but profound question: “What did our community do in 2025 to be effectively and authentically the signs and bearers of God’s love to young people, who are poor?” Communities are also asked to look ahead to 2026, identifying ways to expand access and improve outreach.
“This audit is not just about data—it is about conscience and commitment,” said a spokesperson for the SPCSA. “By reflecting together, we ensure that our mission remains rooted in the needs of the poorest youth, while contributing to the broader goal of nation building.”
Guided by a structured template, the Community Audit makes reviews systematic and practical. Communities are encouraged to document each service, identify and quantify beneficiaries, track funding sources, and define poverty in its many dimensions. They are also asked to maintain verifiable records, measure tangible outcomes such as jobs secured or certificates earned, and conclude with the crucial question: “How can we do more or better?”
Parallel Efforts
Alongside the Community Audit, SPCSA has asked the provincial Economers to lead a Social Audit to assess how infrastructure and amenities are oriented toward empowering youth. Together, these initiatives form a comprehensive framework of reflection, accountability, and recommitment.
The SPCSA emphasizes that the audit is both a mirror and a map: a mirror reflecting the authenticity of Salesian service, and a map guiding the journey toward a South Asia where no young person is left behind.
Quoting their Founder, Don Bosco, the regional coordinator reminded communities: “Let us never forget that we exist for poor and abandoned boys.” With this spirit, the Salesians of Don Bosco in South Asia are set to Reflect, Record, and Recommit—ensuring that by 2030, their collective mission will have made a measurable impact in eradicating poverty through action on the 17 SDG goal areas and in empowering youth across the region.
