Salesian Institutions Join Hands to Reach Hundreds of Assam Flood Victims

Salesian institutions and communities across Assam responded to recent floods with a humanitarian effort that reached hundreds of affected families, providing food, household essentials, hygiene materials, emergency supplies and educational support.

From churches and schools to local Salesian communities, the relief efforts showed direct intervention in flood-hit villages, with each institution addressing specific needs identified in the affected communities.

St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Tinsukia, under the Diocese of Dibrugarh, reached 261 families in Sivasagar district on August 12. The church distributed relief packages in Doh Gaon, Majhi Gaon, Panbesa, and Panbesa Dihingia Chuk, covering areas under the Lachit, Batebari, and Panbesa Panchayats. The largest number of families received aid in Panbesa, where 105 families were assisted, followed by Majhi Gaon with 65, Panbesa Dihingia Chuk with 51, and Doh Gaon with 40. The church had taken around 400 relief packages for flood-affected communities.

At Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Baghchung, Jorhat, the intervention focused on families in three locations within Khelua Gram Panchayat in Sivasagar district, particularly communities that had received limited support due to severe waterlogging and difficult access. Around 400 families were provided with a wide range of relief materials, including dry ration, drinking water, emergency kits, tarpaulins, bedding, mosquito nets, buckets, sanitary pads, soap, torches, stationery and basic medical supplies.

The Baghchung initiative was notable for the direct involvement of around 30 teachers, who travelled with the Principal and Vice-Principal into the affected areas despite difficult road conditions and floodwaters. The relief effort was supported by the school management, donors, parents, students, alumni and well-wishers.

Don Bosco Amguri adopted a two-phase approach, reaching 91 families with assistance tailored to immediate and longer-term needs. At Amgorie Tea Estate on July 25, 26 families received food provisions, including rice, dal, cooking oil, vegetables, sugar, salt, biscuits and milk powder. The second phase at Lukhurakhan Gaon on August 6 assisted 65 families with household and hygiene supplies, including buckets, mugs, bedsheets, towels, sanitary pads, mosquito coils, washing powder, bleaching powder, and water bottles.

Beyond immediate relief, Don Bosco Amguri also addressed the educational disruption caused by the floods byproviding nine students with complete sets of books so they could resume or continue their studies despite the difficult circumstances.

At Don Bosco Dibrugarh, the relief initiative brought together parents, alumni, teachers and management to support flood-affected communities. The team visited Komolsapori under Nazira on August 7, distributing relief materials to 130 families, while another 50 families received assistance at Simalguri, bringing the total reached to 180 families.

Together, these interventions show a multi-pronged Salesian response to the Assam floods. They combined food security, household assistance, health and hygiene support, emergency supplies, educational aid and direct community outreach, while also reflecting the active participation of teachers, students, parents, alumni, donors, management and local Salesian communities.
