Don Bosco Veedu Hosts Aarkkum Paadam on Independence Day
Don Bosco Veedu’s Independence Day celebration at MSK Nagar turned into a vibrant expression of freedom, culture, and community spirit with Aarkkum Paadam (Anyone Can Sing), a cultural evening held under the theme “Celebrating True Freedom.”
Organised as part of the AWAKE project, the event sought to bring women of the colony together and rejuvenate SHEROES, a collective for women’s empowerment. The 79th Independence Day of the nation thus became a stage not only for remembrance but also for reclaiming voices that often go unheard.
The evening began with the unveiling of the program design by Trivandrum MLA Antony Raju, who lauded Don Bosco Veedu’s socially relevant initiatives. “This is a new freedom,” he remarked, “where anyone can sing their dreams out loud, no longer buried in silence.”
Nearly 20 karaoke performances, interspersed with reflections on the meaning of freedom, became the soul of the evening. Police officers from Fort Station, led by their CI, joined residents in song, underlining how culture can break barriers and unite communities.
Fr. Thomas Mekkaden, Director of Don Bosco Nivas, highlighted Don Bosco Veedu’s ongoing projects and acknowledged the community’s cooperation in the AWAKE initiative. Rector Fr. Jiji reminded participants of the deeper legacy of independence: “Our freedom fighters did not struggle so we could live divided by petty differences, but so that we might live united, with dignity and hope.”
Residents themselves gave freedom a personal meaning. Abel, a student, said, “Freedom means I can go to school, open my books, and dream about my future.” Pranav, a local youth, added, “Freedom is choosing my path and speaking without fear.” A women’s representative from Rakendu shared, “Freedom lets me speak proudly and chase my dreams without discrimination.”
Anchored by Jeena, a dynamic youth leader, the event also featured quiz competitions, interactive games, and a lucky draw for women participants, adding a celebratory note. Behind the scenes, chief coordinator Kavya worked tirelessly with women’s groups, residents, and local leaders to ensure the program’s success.
Closing on a hopeful note, Don Bosco Veedu announced that Aarkkum Paadam will return in December, promising greater reach, participation, and impact.
