Lo Groi Memorial Lecture Highlights Rohingya Refugee Crisis

Sonada, 7 November 2020: The department of Political Science, Sociology and BSW in collaboration with Salesian College Sonada IQAC, organised Lo Groi Memorial lecture on `Refugee Crisis in Asia with special reference to Rohingya Refugees` on 7th November 2020 through the online platform Google Meet.
122 participants attended the on-line lecture jointly convened by Mr. Samip Sinchuri, Mr Pawan Rai and Ms Sumina Chettri.
Rector of Salesian College Sonada Fr. Dr. Tomy Augustine inaugurated the webinar along with senior most faculty and former Dean Fr A.U. Thomas, former Vice Principal and Director of Radio Salesian Fr. C.M. Paul, and Vice Principal Br. P.A. Jose who lit the ceremonial lamp.
The resource person for the memorial lecture was Salesian College Sonada Alumnus and a student of Fr Lo Groi Mr. Francis Scaria Palakeel, International Civil Servant, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Regional Human Resource Officer based in Bangkok, Thailand.
The speaker, Mr Palakeel, highlighted the plight of refugees worldwide distinguishing them from homeless people and migrants. He lso highlighted the plight of the Rohingya refugees from Myanmar who are currently sheltered in refugee camps in Cox`s Bazar, Bangladesh.
Since the year 2010 Salesian College has been organising Lo Groi Memorial Lecture in honour of Rev. Fr. Nicholas Lo Groi who spent some 26 years in Salesian College in different capacities as a student, a faculty member, Principal and two terms Rector.
Born in Sicily, southern Italy on 18 February 1922 Fr. Lo Groi framed the college motto `Flamma Ardens et Lucens` (A flame that enlivens and enlightens) and designed the college emblem.
He completed his doctorate in Philosophy from Salesian University Turin in 1953 and was head of Philosophy Department in Sonada till 1959.
Fr. Nicholas Lo Groi (88 years) who died, on 14 March 2010, in Kolkata was Director of Novices at Sunnyside Shillong, Provincial and historian of Kolkata province as well as ace formator at Salesian College Sonada and Don Bosco National Renewal Centre, Bangalore.
Faculty member Ms. Jessica Nyss summarised the session followed by brief question and answer session. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Ms. Sneha Mangar. END
