A great day of jubilation for the Province of Chennai as seven clerics of Chennai Province, four clerics of Tiruchy Province and two Josephites clerics were ordained as Deacons by the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, Most Rev Dr George Antonysamy, with Rt Rev Dr Jeromedhas Varuvel SDB, Bishop Emeritus of Kuzhithurai and former Novice Master, Father KM Jose SDB, Provincial of Chennai Province, Father Agilan Sarprasadam SDB, Provincial of Tiruchy and Father Bellarmine Fernando, Rector of Don Bosco Theological Centre, at St. Mary`s Co-Cathedral, Chennai, on the solemnity of St. Joseph, March 19, 2022.

Don Bosco Relief Services (DBRS)- SURABI, in its fight against the spread of the deadly virus, COVID-19, has initiated several measures. The major hold-up being the misinformation among people regarding the jab against the virus, DBRS has begun an awareness campaign. Another initiative is the care centre with oxygen facilities. The relief packages include dry ration and medical kits distributed to the poor.

In a function held at the Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur, to distribute Covid homecare medical kits and protein-enriched dry ration to Covid affected families in the region, Father John Alexander, Rector, presented the findings of the Covid-impact survey conducted by the college.

Don Bosco Relief Services (DBRS) - SURABI, of the Salesian Province of Chennai, has stepped into the lives of the poor to alleviate their struggles against the pandemic and the subsequent poverty. DBRS has supported the needy with a ration kit comprising rice, pulses, oil, rava, spices, bathing and washing soaps, Vitamin C and Zinc tablets, 500 gms of health mix and a thermometer. The beneficiaries are 500 beach vendors in Chennai, 27 transgenders, 43 senior citizens in Washermanpet, 23 physically challenged and seven domestic workers with the help of Don Bosco Vazhikatti, Permabur.

On April 28, 2021, five Salesians, Arockia Anbu, Arun Sagayaraj, Gabriel Selvakumar, Gabriel Paulraj C, and Devaraj Jayaraj, were ordained priests in the Salesian Province of Chennai at Don Bosco Katpadi by the Salesian Archbishop Emeritus Chinnappa Malayappan D.D. Though scheduled to be ordained in December 2020, the pandemic and its resurgence made the celebrations postponed for a while. However, the service was conducted in compliance with the COVID protocol.

Rinaldi - Don Bosco Youth Centre, Chennai organized two days of Dominic Savio Football Tournament for under 14 age category children from 20th to 21st February 2021. The sprawling SIGA oratory campuswas filled with more than 500 young children in this august gathering.

On 9th October 2020, Department of Life Education at Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur, India organized Fr. Joseph Carreno Memorial Lecture on the topic, ``What is God Doing Through the Coronavirus?`` The lecture was delivered by Fr. John Alexander SDB, Rector & Secretary of the college. The Memorial Lecture was established to honour Fr. Joseph Carreno who was the founder of Sacred Heart College and a zealous apostle of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As a Provincial, Fr. Carreno had consecrated the entire Salesian Province of South India to the Sacred Heart on 2nd July 1943.

On Thursday, 8th October 2020, the fourth volume of Don Bosco Theological Series titled Communicating the Good News: A Renewed Focus on Evangelization, edited by Fr. Cassius Correya SDB,was launched at Don Bosco Theological Centre. The Chief Guest of the event was Rev. Fr. Biju MichaelSDB, the General Councillor for South Asia Region. Rev. Fr. K.M. JoseSDB, the Provincial of Chennai, and Rev. Fr. Freddie Pereira SDB, the Provincial Secretary of Bangalore, were also present for the occasion. Rev. Fr. Bellarmine Fernando SDB, the Rector of the Theologate, welcomed the guests and all present. In his welcome address, Fr. Bellarmine appreciated Rev. Fr. Biju Michael for the enthusiastic way he has begun his ministry as the Regional Superior of South Asia.

Fr. Hendry Selvaraj Dominic SDB defended his doctoral thesis on 13 July 2020 at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He was solemnly declared a Doctor in Church History by the academic panel of the Church History Department of the Gregorian University, soon after his public defense of the research he had undertaken entitled “The Contribution of Mgr. Louis Mathias SDB to the Catholic Church with Special Reference to the Formation of Indian Seminarians at Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamalle, Tamil Nadu (1935-1965).”

Tamil Nadu Government announced an “Intense Lockdown” for four days throughout the State of Tamil Nadu from 27th to 30th April 2020. During this period with the exception of the pharmacies and the medical services, the rest were shut down. Once again, the poor who depend on daily wages were hard hit because of this announcement. None of the relief activities could be carried out during this intense lock-down period. Don Bosco Relief Services made use of this opportunity to promote Cash for Work Program for the persons who lost their livelihood. Packing of relief materials in a more safe and Eco-friendly way was carried out for eighteen Women and six Men.

Day 1: Introduction: The 21-day lockdown has come to an end today. Prime Minister of the country has announced the extension of the complete lockdown of the country till May 3 2020. The poor have been left to fend for themselves for next 19 days.

Don Bosco Relief Service(DBRS) under SURABI the Project office of teh Salesian Province of Madras [INM], is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic during the lockdown phase in and around Chennai. `Stay at Home and be safe` is not a reality for migrants and unorganized labourers who have to work every day to earn their livelihood. Many are from other States. Children cannot stay inside their houses. Chennai Salesians are responding to this Coronavirus outbreak that has had a major impact on two of the most vulnerable communities in Tamil Nadu, migrant construction and brick-kiln labourers, who have been rendered jobless in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts.

Italy reported 683 new deaths in the coronavirus pandemic, bringing its total to 7,503. Spain, meanwhile, recorded more than 700 deaths over the past 24 hours - surpassing China in the global death toll - making the country now second to only Italy.
