Free Medical Camp Brings Essential Healthcare to Kerala’s Coastal Community

Nearly 100 residents of Mangalam's coastal villages, Alappuzha, Kerala, benefited from a free one-day medical camp organised by the Family Commission of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, PHC Mangalam, and IDS Alappuzha, bringing much-needed healthcare services closer to a community that often faces challenges in accessing medical care.
The initiative aimed to address the healthcare needs of coastal families, many of whom have to travel long distances or sacrifice daily wages to consult a doctor. The camp offered general and orthopaedic consultations, along with free screening for blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. The beneficiaries received the medicines at no cost.
Among those who received treatment was a local fisherman who had been enduring persistent shoulder pain for several months. He said he had long assumed the pain was an unavoidable consequence of his profession but was grateful for the opportunity to receive medical attention close to home.
The camp was inaugurated by Fr. Jiby, Rector and Vicar of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, in the presence of Mr Jose Chellappan, Vice Chairman of the Municipality, and members of the PHC Mangalam medical team.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr. Jiby appreciated the Family Commission for organising the outreach programme and reaffirmed the parish's commitment to conducting similar healthcare initiatives in the future. Mr Chellappan highlighted the importance of collective efforts in promoting community health, while the PHC Mangalam team assured continued support for future medical outreach programmes.
Organisers said the camp not only provided free medical care but also reinforced the importance of making quality healthcare accessible to underserved coastal communities through collaborative local initiatives.
