In a significant initiative aimed at advancing the welfare and sustainable development of the fisherfolk community, the Fishermen Community Development Programme (FCDP), led by the Salesians of Don Bosco, presented a comprehensive set of policy recommendations to Sri V. D. Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

The discussion focused on the pressing issues facing coastal communities and on possible policy directions for their long-term development and security. Fr. Saji Elambassheril, Director of FCDP and a Salesian of Don Bosco, formally handed over the final document containing the policy proposals formulated through Kadal Conclave 2026.

Kadal Conclave 2026, organised jointly by the Fishermen Community Development Programme (FCDP) and the Theeradesa Mahila Society (TMS), brought together experts from diverse fields, scientists, fisherfolk representatives, and social activists. The conclave served as a platform for in-depth study and dialogue on the challenges faced by the coastal population, including livelihood security, environmental concerns, and social development. The final document presented to the Opposition Leader incorporated the collective insights and recommendations that emerged from these deliberations.

During the meeting, Fr. Saji Elambassheril explained in detail the 26 policy proposals prepared through the conclave, highlighting their significance in ensuring the safety, economic empowerment, and holistic development of the fisherfolk community. The proposals include forward-looking initiatives, such as establishing an Oceanography Museum and a Documentation Centre to preserve and promote the knowledge, history, and contributions of coastal communities.

In his response, V. D. Satheesan commended the efforts of the Salesians and the organisers of the Kadal Conclave, noting that the proposals contain strong and meaningful ideas capable of guiding the comprehensive development of coastal regions. He particularly appreciated the vision behind initiatives like the Oceanography Museum and Documentation Centre, describing them as timely and relevant. Satheesan also assured that serious steps would be taken to implement these recommendations if his alliance comes to power.

Several prominent leaders, including Kollam MP N. K. Premachandran, former MLA Shibu Baby John, Kollam Mayor A. K. Hafees, and DCC President P attended the meeting. Rajendra Prasad. They expressed their commitment to supporting the proposals to improve the living conditions and opportunities of the fisherfolk community.

The presentation of the policy document was an important step in bringing the concerns of coastal communities into the political conversation, setting the stage for further discussions within the United Democratic Front (UDF) on addressing the needs and aspirations of the fisherfolk in Kerala.
