Salesian Jubilee Trilogy Concludes with 'Legacy of Unity'
The Salesian Family is celebrating 150 years of missionary service with the release of Legacy of Unity, the third and final documentary in a jubilee trilogy marking the sesquicentennial of Saint John Bosco’s first missionary expedition in 1875. Don Bosco transformed missionary zeal into a way of life, entrusting his sons and daughters with a daring vision: to reach the young, especially the poorest and most abandoned, wherever they may be. Watch the video that shows how unity in the Salesian Family becomes a credible Gospel witness.
Following Legacy of Love and Legacy of Grace, this concluding film Legacy of Unity reveals the deepest strength of the Salesian mission today: unity in communion and collaboration. Set in South Sudan, a nation scarred by civil war and humanitarian crises, the documentary highlights how Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC), Visitation Sisters of Don Bosco (VSDB), Caritas Sisters of Jesus (Japan), and lay collaborators stand together in one mission with one heart.
The film features testimonies of missionaries who endured captivity, bombings, and forced marches, sustained only by prayer and the Eucharist. Their stories culminate not in despair, but in grace: the smile of a displaced child, the rebirth of hope in a traumatised village, and the emergence of vocations amid devastation. Inspired by the Trinitarian mystery and the synodal vision of the Church, the film shows how unity among religious congregations and lay people multiplies mission effectiveness and becomes a credible Gospel witness.
These documentaries remind us that mission is never an individual enterprise. Rooted in Don Bosco’s dream and the Great Commission (Mt 28:19), it flourishes only when lived in unity.
Scripted and directed by Fr. Biju Michael—a seasoned communicator and award-winning filmmaker—the films maintain an authentic narrative style that resonates with both spiritual and secular audiences. His work has earned international recognition, including a jury prize at the Magnificat International Catholic Film Festival in Belarus for The Pool of Siloam, and screenings and award at festivals in Poland. His documentary film, Thun Hu won screenings in the Asiatica film festival in Rome.
Post-production was carried out at FrameFlow - DBICA, Chennai, under the expertise of Fr. Ernest Rosario, Fr Joseph PT, and Fr. Britto Francis. Their craftsmanship has given the trilogy a visually compelling and spiritually resonant quality.
Fr. Biju remarked: “May this jubilee trilogy stir hearts, inspire new vocations, deepen collaboration within the Salesian Family, and renew commitment to Don Bosco’s mission for the young—especially those living on the world’s most painful frontiers.”
