The year-long celebration of the centenary of Fr. Constantine Vendrame's arrival in Northeast India in 1924 concluded on December 15, 2024, in the Province of St. John Paul II, Shillong, in collaboration with the parish of Mawpdang.
On December 17, the Catholic Church and the Salesian Congregation marked a historic moment as Father Wangbo George Wangsu, the first Salesian priest from Arunachal Pradesh, was ordained at St. Joseph Parish Mintong, by Rev. Bishop George Palliparambil, SDB, DD, the Bishop of Miao Diocese. Father Wangbo George Wangsu, belonging to the Wancho Tribe, is a testimony to the enduring missionary efforts in the region. Father Wangsu was ordained in the presence of Auxiliary Bishop Denis Panipitchai SDB and a host of Salesians, clergy, religious sisters, and faithful from across the region. Father George Wangsu is the eldest of seven siblings of Mr. Banwang and Mrs Banchoi Wangsu.
Fifty years have passed since the sons of Don Bosco began their mission work on the land of colour and culture – Gujarat. To express their gratitude to the Divine and celebrate this remarkable milestone, around 65 Salesian priests and brothers from the Province of Mumbai, 15 priests from the Dioceses, Religious Sisters and collaborators, parishioners, youth and children - beneficiaries of Salesian Institutions and well-wishers of Don Bosco gathered at Don Bosco Makarpura on December 7.
During the 155th Salesian Missionary Expedition on September 29, 2024, the East Asia-Oceania (EAO) Region sent and received missionaries. Among those sent is Fr. Joseph Vanga, one of two missionaries heading to the PGS Vice-Province, given the new Salesian presence in Vanuatu in 2025.
In preparation for the centenary of Kolkata Province, the first Salesian Province in India established in 1926, a Don Bosco Mission Seminar is being held in Salesian College Sonada, Darjeeling, from October 9-12. A large number of alumni are participating in the seminar.
In a joyous ceremony held on December 29 at Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, seven deacons were ordained as priests for the Salesian Province of Tiruchy. Most Rev. Dr Antony Pappusamy, the Archbishop of Madurai, presided over the solemn Eucharistic celebration and conferred the ordination.
Kolkata Salesians have partnered in joint mission efforts for a second time with St Joseph’s Province of Vincentian Fathers by offering existing Salesian facilities in Nepal and India. Bishop Vincent Aind of Bagdogra in Siliguri blessed the existing Salesian facility, christened it Messengers of Good News and offered it to the Vincentians on April 19, 2023. Called Vincentian Ashram, the facility is situated near Champasari-Debidanga in Siliguri, the commercial hub of North Bengal.
Most Reverend Andrew R. Marak, Bishop of Tura blessed and inaugurated the Orestes Marengo Memorial Chapel at Bosco Mount, Rongkhon Parish, Tura, Meghalaya.
Salesian Province of St Joseph loses yet another stalwart and a pioneer who toiled relentlessly in the Lord`s vineyard. Father Thattil Chacko, sdb, aged 81 died while being treated at Vijay Marie Hospital on 19 April 2022. He suffered from severe Parkinson’s disease for almost 20 years. He was active and effective in his ministry serving the people entrusted to his care to the best of his ability. His mission in Ravulapalem, Mariapuram and Odisha speaks volumes about his pastoral zeal for souls and for God`s greater glory.
