Radio Salesian Champions Darjeeling’s First-Ever ‘Doko Trail Run’ to Celebrate Culture and Community
In a vibrant fusion of sport, tradition, and community spirit, the hamlet of Rajahatta Khasmahal in the Darjeeling hills is preparing to host the first-ever Doko Trail Run on Sunday, November 2, 2025. The pioneering event, organized by the Rajahatta Explore Group, is attracting runners from across India and South Asia.
Registrations are now open, both online and offline, with a participation fee of ₹1700. Runners can register via the Explore Group’s official Facebook page or offline at Anand Chettri’s shop in 8th Mile Bazaar or through RJ Samir, Program Coordinator at Radio Salesian 90.8 FM.
Adding energy and visibility to the initiative is Radio Salesian, Darjeeling’s first community radio station. From broadcasting inspiring stories of runners and youth reflections to sharing real-time event updates across remote hill communities, the station has played a pivotal role in boosting public engagement.
“As a community radio, we believe in amplifying grassroots voices. The Doko Trail Run reflects the resilience of our people, and Radio Salesian is honoured to walk—and run—with them,” said RJ Samir.
The race draws its name and inspiration from the ‘doko’—a traditional handwoven bamboo basket carried on the back with the support of a ‘namlo’ across the forehead. Deeply rooted in the daily lives of ethnic hill communities such as the Gorkha, Lepcha, and others, the doko symbolizes endurance, livelihood, and cultural pride.
“The Doko Trail Run is not just a sporting event, but a message—a call to our youth to uphold the values of perseverance, community, and cultural pride,” said Pratap Rai, General Secretary of the Explore Group.
To encourage broader participation, runners from Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Siliguri, and the Terai-Dooars region will receive 50% discounts on food and accommodation.
Event organizers and Radio Salesian urge well-wishers, athletes, and cultural enthusiasts to follow their social media platforms for updates, behind-the-scenes coverage, and local stories leading up to the event.
