GC29: Fr Patrick Alexander, The Man Behind the Scene

News written by: Special Correspondent

Fr. Patrick Alexander, the general coordinator of the General Chapter of the Salesians of Don Bosco, has earned a reputation for his organizational skills, attention to detail, and concern for the confreres. His work during GC 29, held at Valdocco, Turin, is a testament to his professionalism, efficiency, and dedication. Fr. Patrick Alexander hails from the Salesian Province of Tiruchy, India, and presently belongs to Salesian Headquarters in Rome.

As a key organizing team member, Fr. Patrick worked behind the scenes to ensure the smooth execution of logistics and the programme under the guidance of the Moderator of the General Chapter, Fr. Alphonse Owoudou. A competent team of Salesians and laypeople assisted him.

What set Fr. Patrick apart, however, was his ability to blend his technical skills with his dedication. Techno-savvy and capable of managing complex tasks, he was instrumental in integrating modern technologies to streamline communication and ensure everything went smoothly. Whether setting up virtual platforms, managing databases, or coordinating with various international delegates, Patrick’s expertise in technology was indispensable. His efficient use of digital tools not only made the proceedings of GC 29 go effectively but also demonstrated his forward-thinking approach to logistical coordination.

Furthermore, Patrick’s bilingualism in English and Italian allowed him to bridge communication gaps and be accessible to a wide range of participants. His ability to communicate fluently in both languages helped him connect with fellow Salesians worldwide. His command of Italian and English meant he was often the go-to person for participants needing assistance.

His international experience made him particularly adept at understanding the diverse needs of the participants of GC 29. Fr Stanislaus Swamikannu, when asked to comment on Fr. Patrick, said, “A man in the background, a good team worker. Very gentle, calm, but firm in decision making.” Another chapter member said, “Patrick’s contribution to the General Chapter is invaluable. He handled his various responsibilities and stress with great calm. He was the man behind the scenes and a man on his feet.”
