Indian Ambassador Lauds Salesian in Guatemala
The Indian Ambassador, Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, during his visit to the headquarters of FUNDEMI Talita Kumi, a distinguished Salesian foundation located in San Pedro Carchá, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, on 4th April, admired the exemplary work of Father Jorge (George) Puthempura, an Indian-origin Salesian missionary and the visionary founder of the institution. Fr Jorge is an alumnus of the Salesian College Sonada of the early 1960s.
Father Puthempura has devoted over five decades to uplifting the Q'eqchi Mayan community in Guatemala. Arriving in San Pedro Carchá in 1970, soon after his ordination, he dedicated himself to understanding the local culture and mastered the Q'eqchi language to foster deeper connections.
Among his notable achievements is the founding of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection in 1977, an indigenous women's group championing education, pastoral care, and community development. The congregation has flourished, with its members actively serving in various communities and dioceses.
Dr. Mohapatra delivered an inspiring address to students during his visit, emphasizing the importance of finding spiritual meaning in their pursuits. He also invited students to engage in upcoming activities spearheaded by the Indian Embassy in Alta Verapaz.
FUNDEMI Talita Kumi, renowned for its pivotal role in promoting equitable education for girls, acknowledged the ambassador's support with heartfelt gratitude. In a gesture of appreciation, a student presented him with a meaningful memento on behalf of the foundation.
