Salesian Family in Sri Lanka Holds Thanksgiving Mass to Celebrate Missionary Legacy and Holiness
The Salesian Family in Sri Lanka came together on November 5 for a solemn Eucharistic celebration, offering thanks and praise to the Triune God for the countless blessings received through years of faithful service and missionary zeal. The Thanksgiving Mass, imbued with gratitude and joy, reflected on five significant intentions that underscored the enduring spiritual and missionary heritage of Don Bosco’s sons and daughters.
The first remembrance marked the 150th anniversary of Don Bosco’s first missionary expedition to Argentina on November 11, 1875, led by Fr. John Cagliero, SDB—later Cardinal—whose pioneering courage continues to inspire the missionary spirit of the Salesian Family worldwide.
The second intention paid tribute to Fr. Hendry Remery, SDB, the pioneering missionary who planted the seeds of the Salesian mission in Sri Lanka. His passing on October 24, 2000, was recalled with deep respect and affection, as his example of generosity and faith remains an enduring source of inspiration.
Looking ahead, the Salesian Family also began preparing for the 70th anniversary of the Salesian mission in Sri Lanka, to be celebrated in 2026. Since its foundation in 1956, the mission has flourished through the commitment of both local and foreign Salesians dedicated to serving the young and the marginalized.
A touching highlight of the day was the commemoration of Mamma Margaret, Don Bosco’s mother, celebrated as a model of faith, simplicity, and maternal love. The occasion also doubled as Parents’ Day for Salesians, honouring the families whose prayers and sacrifices nurture vocations and sustain the Salesian mission.
The celebration reached its joyful peak with thanksgiving for the canonization of St. Maria Troncatti, FMA, on October 19 by Pope Leo XIV, hailed as a new “flower in the garden of Salesian holiness.”
The Eucharistic gathering concluded with fervent prayers for all Salesians, Sisters, benefactors, young people, and collaborators, that the Lord may continue to guide and bless them in their mission of education, service, and evangelization.
