Over 100 students and faculty members from Salesian College Sonada and Sonada Higher Secondary School, along with monks from Sonada Monastery, police personnel, members of NGO and employees of the Forest Department, participated in planting over 1000 saplings in Tukrey Forest in Gorabari, Darjeeling.

The Darjeeling Forest Department organized the tree planting campaign to mark and observe Van Mahotsav (Tree Festival) 2023. Van Mahotsav is observed annually over a week in July to create enthusiasm among the masses for forest conservation and planting trees. The drive was part of a massive campaign organized to plant over 25,000 saplings all over the state.

Vishwanath Pratap N, District Forest Officer of Darjeeling Forest division, opined that tree planting is necessary for Darjeeling hills as trees bind the soil, prevent landslides, improve air quality and help to get more rainfall. The campaign drives home the message of the conservation of forests to combat the adverse effects of global warming.
