Village Hosts Concert in Memory of Italian Missionary

A rural mission village in Darjeeling Hills hosted a two-hour open-air concert in memory of mission founder Father Luigi Jellici featuring orchestra pieces and cultural dances on November 28, 2021. Dhajea Busty mission, which hosted the event, was started in the 1990s by Father Jellici, the founder of Don Bosco Mirik mission in 1995.
Father Jellici memorial concert, a brainchild of music maestro Father Dr Nirmol Gomes, was held on the grounds of Nazareth Bhavan Salesian Novitiate to showcase the musical talents of Dhajea Busty youth in collaboration with nine Salesian novices. Besides orchestra pieces, there were also cultural dances by the village youth. Luigi Jellici, born in Tesero near Trentino in north-eastern Italy, came to India with 7 Salesian companions on December 5, 1932. Father Jellici worked in the Balasun Valley from 1963 till his death in 2009 from Sonada and Mirik in the Darjeeling district. Father Jellci was organist and choirmaster at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral in Calcutta for 17 years before his transfer to Salesian College Sonada, where he stayed for 29 years and moved to Don Bosco Church Mirik in 1992, where he worked for 17 years. At Father Jellici`s death at the age of 94 in 2009, there were 24 Mass centres, parishes in Sonada and Mirik, and a quasi-parish in Dhajea and over 400 Catholic families.
