Don Bosco Ashalayam Facilitates Homebound Journey of 60 Migrant Labourers

On 27 May 2020, Ashalayam Don Bosco, New Delhi helped 60 migrant labourers return home from Delhi to Madhuvani and Chhapra in Bihar, by 02 separate buses. The nationwide lockdown has pushed migrant labourers coming from various states across India and who have been thus far working in the country`s capital, into a state of extreme helplessness and risk.
For most daily wage-earnign migrant labourers, there is an immediate loss of daily wages, caught in a storm of socio-economic exclusion, loss of livelihood and public health hazards. Majority of these migrants hail from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Rajasthan. Reverse migration too is happening on a large scale as they feel the stress of the moment. Returning to their villages leaving their livelihoods, and staring into deep uncertainty. many migrant families are stranded and at a loss. ``My family did not have food to eat for last two days, I am a daily wager. There is no work for me. I wanted to go back to my native place. I did not know how to go. But you have come to me as a messiah and helped me and my family to go back to my place. I cannot forget this generosity,`` said Ramakant, a native of Madhuvani, who had been working in Delhi for many years. Father Swanoop coordinated the bus facilitation obtaining the required permissions from the Inter-State Government officials, with passenger registration and COVID-19 testing at the District Magistrate`s Office at Khaanpur, Delhi. Food packets, water, fruits and masks through the kind courtesy of many generous benefactors, was also proviuded to teh travelling homebound. The kind gesture was appreciated by all the homebounbd labourers. Father Chaudhury says, ``I will never forget the repeated blessings I received from a lady who had tears of gratitude in her eyes.``
