DBTC Seminar Explores Praedicate Evangelium and Synodality in Church Mission

Don Bosco Theological Centre (DBTC), Kavarapettai, organised a seminar on the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium (Preach the Gospel) as part of the traditional Pope's Day celebration held in conjunction with the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. The programme brought together priests, religious brothers and sisters for a day of theological reflection on missionary renewal, structural reform and synodality in the Church.

The keynote address was delivered by Fr. Stalin Dhanaraj SDB, Delegate for Youth Ministry of the Salesian Province of Chennai (INM) and Professor of Canon Law at DBTC. Drawing on the Apostolic Constitution promulgated by the late Pope Francis, he explained how Praedicate Evangelium redefines the mission of the Roman Curia by placing evangelisation at its centre, and how this supports greater participation, transparency and service within the Church.

Fr. Stalin traced the document to the broader vision of Pope Francis' pontificate (2013–2024), highlighting its continuity with the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. He outlined the reforms introduced in the Roman Curia, including the clearer responsibilities assigned to the dicasteries, and showed how the constitution is shaped by communion, missionary outreach and practical synodality.

A major feature of the seminar was a series of student presentations by Br. Arun, Br. Antony and Br. Sandep, who examined the historical development and key provisions of the constitution. Their presentations explained the restructuring of the sixteen dicasteries and showed how the document encourages greater collaboration between clergy and laity in the governance and mission of the Church.

The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion moderated by Fr. Stanley Jayakumar, during which participants engaged the student presenters and the keynote speaker in a lively exchange on the theological and pastoral implications of the constitution.
