Salesian Cooperators Witness Transformative Mission in Ahmednagar Outreach
News reported by: Jacinta Jones
In a vibrant expression of Salesian commitment and solidarity, 50 Salesian Cooperators undertook a two-day outreach mission to Ahmednagar, engaging closely with parishes, rural missions, and social centres to witness and support grassroots initiatives in the region. The delegation was led by their delegate, Fr Diego Nunes.
The mission commenced on the night of February 20, with the group’s departure from Our Lady of Dolours Church and the base of activities at Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra (BGVK). The Cooperators brought with them generous contributions of food grains, clothing, stationery, and financial assistance to strengthen ongoing local programmes. On arrival, they were warmly received by Fr George and the BGVK team with a traditional tilak, topi, and uparna, symbolising hospitality and respect.
During a morning orientation session, Fr Diego Nunes drew attention to the global 150th anniversary of the Salesian Cooperators. He encouraged local units to internalise the year’s Strenna through concrete social and pastoral action, calling for special initiatives and progress reports to be submitted by the end of April 2026.
The outreach programme included visits to historic and pastoral centres, notably St John’s Church, with its 156-year legacy, and St Anne’s Church. In the rural mission areas of Ratadgaon and Kandka, the Cooperators witnessed firsthand the far-reaching socioeconomic impact of Salesian presence.
Ratadgaon, home to four generations of Catholic families, showcased BGVK’s sustained support through women’s centres, balwadis, and essential infrastructure projects related to water supply, poultry, and animal husbandry. In Kandka, the group interacted with 52 families and 60 students, engaging in conversations around health, education, and future aspirations. A poignant moment emerged when a villager shared, “Praying keeps us happy,” reflecting the community’s deep-rooted faith. Students spoke of ambitions to become teachers, police officers, and mechanics, prompting the Cooperators to distribute stationery and food supplies to help them realise their dreams.
The mission also included a visit to Pumpkin House, an orphanage caring for 62 children, underscoring the Salesian charism of being a “home that welcomes.” The outreach concluded on February 22 with a solemn Eucharistic celebration at the newly constructed Don Bosco Church. After a farewell lunch hosted by Fr Richard D’Silva, the group returned to Mumbai.
Expressing gratitude, Fr Diego Nunes lauded the generosity and perseverance of the Cooperators, particularly the senior members. At the same time, participants praised the well-coordinated programme that renewed their commitment to the mission and spirit of Don Bosco.
