What Is My Fundamental Option? Is It Jesus? – Rector Major Fr. Fabio Attard Calls Salesians to Renewed Fidelity at Don Bosco Kokar

News written by: Mr. Sebastian Subhas Hembrom

Don Bosco Kokar witnessed a moment of profound spiritual significance when Fr. Fabio Attard, Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, arrived on February 11, 2026, to inaugurate his visitation to the Chottanagpur Region.

As senior Salesians often affirm, “When the Rector Major comes, it is Don Bosco himself who visits.” The gathering at Kokar experienced precisely that sentiment—an encounter not merely with a global superior, but with the living charism of John Bosco embodied in his successor.

The Rector Major landed at Birsa Munda Airport at 5:15 p.m., where he was warmly received by the Salesians amid cordial greetings and visible joy. Escorted by officials provided by the Jharkhand Government, he proceeded to the Kokar campus, where students, staff, and members of the Salesian Family had assembled in anticipation.

A culturally rich reception awaited him. The rhythmic beats of traditional Adivasi drums and graceful tribal dances reflected the vibrant heritage of Jharkhand, often called the “Land of Tribal Culture and Mineral Wealth.” In keeping with local customs, the Rector Major was honoured with ceremonial washing of hands, followed by aarti and tikka—symbols of reverence, purity, and affectionate hospitality.

Students of Don Bosco English Medium School and the ITI section rendered a melodious welcome song, expressing gratitude for his presence. The school band added grandeur to the celebration with an energetic performance that filled the campus with enthusiasm and pride.

In his brief address to the gathering, Fr. Attard encouraged students and Salesians alike to remain faithful to the charism of Don Bosco and to continue their mission with dedication and zeal. His words, marked by simplicity and fatherly warmth, resonated deeply with the community. A photo session followed, allowing the youth to interact personally with their spiritual father.

Conference to Salesians: A Call to Interior Clarity

Later, addressing the Salesians of the Chottanagpur Region, the Rector Major posed a penetrating question that shaped the tone of his conference: “What is my fundamental option? Is Jesus or something else?” His reflection invited each confrere to examine the core of his vocation and missionary commitment.

In a candid observation, he remarked, “We Salesians are becoming victims of our success,” warning against complacency born of institutional achievements. He underscored the need for continual spiritual and pastoral formation, stating, “We are formed, we are moulded, we are shaped in our mission, which calls for formation in the mission.” His insights combined theological depth with pastoral realism, addressing contemporary challenges in youth ministry while reaffirming the enduring relevance of Don Bosco’s preventive system.

Morning Assembly: A Father’s Word to the Youth

The following morning, February 12, the Rector Major was welcomed at the school assembly with the resounding Don Bosco cheer, echoing across the campus with youthful energy. Students and staff stood united in respect and gratitude, recognizing in him the successor of Don Bosco and the spiritual head of the Congregation.

A formal felicitation ceremony followed. The Principal and Rector, Rev. Fr. Babu Varghese, along with Vice-Principal Rev. Fr. Ujwal Emmanuel Bando, presented the Rector Major with a bouquet and shawl as tokens of honour and affectionate regard.

Addressing the assembly, Fr. Attard urged students to grow as individuals rooted in values, faith, and responsibility, inspired by St. John Bosco's educational vision. He emphasized dedication to studies, openness to God’s guidance, and a “commitment to serving others with gratitude in our heart.” His message reflected intellectual clarity and pastoral sensitivity, leaving a lasting impression on the young audience.

After bidding farewell to the students and staff of Don Bosco Kokar, the Rector Major proceeded to Don Bosco Gumla to continue his visitation. His presence in Ranchi will be remembered as a moment of grace—an encounter that renewed faith, strengthened missionary commitment, and rekindled enthusiasm for the Salesian mission entrusted by Don Bosco.
