Salesian Cooperators Champion Preventive System in Thrissur Schools

News written by:  Fr Gilbert Choondal SDB

The Salesian Cooperators of Don Bosco College, Mannuthy, Kerala, have earned recognition for their remarkable initiative in promoting the Preventive System of Don Bosco among schools across Thrissur. The one-day programme, held at Don Bosco College, Mannuthy, brought together more than 300 teachers from over 70 schools, marking a significant step in spreading this time-tested pedagogy.

The sessions were led by Fr. Gilbert Choondal SDB and Fr. Joyce Thonikuzhiyil SDB, who elaborated on the enduring relevance of the Preventive System in addressing the challenges faced by today’s educators. Chief Guest Justice Devan Ramachandran of the High Court inspired the gathering with his reflections on teaching as a vocation. Drawing from his own experiences, he urged teachers to become “inspirers” for their students.

The event opened with a warm welcome by Fr. Cyril Edamana SDB, Rector of Don Bosco College. A panel discussion followed, where teachers shared their concerns and sought solutions rooted in Don Bosco’s educational approach. The day concluded with Mar Bosco Puthur, Bishop Emeritus, honouring senior teachers with mementos in recognition of their service.

Marking the golden jubilee of their local centre, the Salesian Cooperators organized the event entirely on their own resources, covering meals, notes, and certificates for participants. Their dedication underscored their mission to equip educators with the wisdom of Don Bosco’s Preventive System—an approach as relevant in the 21st century as it was in his own time.
