New Shepherds for Salesian Province of Tiruchy
With immense joy and gratitude to God, the Salesian Province of Tiruchy (INT) celebrated the priestly ordination of seven deacons on April 29 at Don Bosco, Thanjavur. Most Rev. Dr. Sahayaraj Thamburaj, DD, Bishop of Thanjavur, presided over the solemn Eucharistic celebration and conferred the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
Fr. Agilan SDB, the Provincial of Tiruchy, extended a heartfelt greeting to the Bishop, the concelebrants, the Salesian confreres, the religious, the families of the ordinandi, and all the faithful. He invited the newly ordained priests to imitate the human qualities of Pope Francis. Emphasizing the Holy Father’s predilection for the poor and the marginalized, Fr. Agilan encouraged the young priests to embody compassion, courage in convictions and decisions, and simplicity of life in their ministry, making Christ present through humble and joyful service.
During the homily, Bishop Sahayaraj shared his connection with the Salesians, recalling his formation years in the Salesian seminary at Poonamallee. He spoke fondly of his over 35-year-long friendship with the Salesian Congregation and expressed his admiration for the Salesian mission. Reflecting on the Gospel of Mark 3:13–15, the Bishop underscored the compassionate nature of Jesus and the divine initiative in vocation. He reminded the newly ordained that Christ chooses whom He wills — first to be with Him, then to be sent forth to preach the Good News and to heal the wounded. The Bishop concluded his reflection on Pope Francis, urging the new priests to follow the Pope’s example in living an authentic, compassionate, and missionary priesthood rooted in the Gospel.
The Province of Tiruchy rejoices in this great blessing and entrusts these young priests to the maternal care of Mary Help of Christians and the guidance of Don Bosco, that they may serve the young and the poor with zeal, love, and pastoral charity.
