Archbishop Elias Frank Strengthens Bonds with Salesians During Pastoral Visit to Nitika Don Bosco
The Salesian Provincial House at Nitika Don Bosco, Kolkata, witnessed a moment of grace and fraternity as His Grace, Archbishop Elias Frank, accompanied by three members of his curia, made a pastoral visit that deepened ties between the Archdiocese of Calcutta and the Salesian Family. The evening, marked by vespers and a fraternal meal, brought together Salesians from neighbouring communities in a spirit of collaboration and shared mission.
The visit began with a personal meeting between Archbishop Frank, himself a one-time Salesian aspirant, and the Provincial, Rev. Fr. Joseph Pauria. Their exchange set a tone of mutual respect and pastoral partnership, emphasizing the harmony between diocesan clergy and Salesian religious in their service to the local Church.
During the evening prayer, Archbishop Frank addressed the assembled Salesians with warmth and gratitude, acknowledging the fraternity and openness he has consistently experienced among them. In a candid and heartfelt reflection, he spoke of the heavy demands of episcopal ministry, describing the growing responsibilities of governance, pastoral care, and spiritual leadership that often weigh on his shoulders.
Recognizing the Salesiansā strengths in catechesis and youth formation, Archbishop Frank invited their assistance in formulating pastoral content and developing modules for catechetical and liturgical renewal. He underscored the importance of engaging students in classes 11 and 12, especially on vital topics such as friendship, relationships, and marriageābefore they encounter complex social realities. His approach reflected both pastoral foresight and a preventative vision for faith formation among the youth.
Archbishop Frank also shared his intention to empower capable laity to lead youth ministry initiatives, allowing priests to focus more fully on prayer and sacramental life. This synodal vision, grounded in collaboration rather than clericalism, marked a significant shift toward shared leadership and a more participatory Church.
The fraternal dinner that followed gathered Salesians and members of the Archbishopās curiaāRev. Fr. Dominic Gomes (Chancellor), Fr. Albert (Administrator), and Fr. Rana (Treasurer)āfor an evening of simple joy and warm dialogue. Though some members, including Vicar General Fr. Moloy DāCosta, were unable to attend, their presence was remembered with affection.
Archbishop Frank, the tenth Archbishop of Calcutta, stands in continuity with his predecessorsāArchbishops Thomas DāSouza and Lucas Sircar SDBāwhose leadership emphasized dialogue, education, and spiritual vitality. His visit to Nitika Don Bosco reaffirmed the shared mission of the diocesan and Salesian communities in revitalizing catechesis, liturgical life, and youth ministry.
The evening concluded not as a mere courtesy call but as a moment of discernment and renewalāan encounter that embodied the very spirit of synodality: journeying together in faith, service, and hope for the flourishing of the Church in Kolkata.
