Padmashree Prof GN Devy of After Amnesia and Indian Aesthetics, the Adivasi Academy and Language Survey of India with a score of awards and recognition to his credit was with Salesian College Sonada-Siliguri the past four days. He and Dr Surekha Devy former professors of MS University, Baroda, Gujarat and presently in Dharwad - post murder of Karlburgi, Gauri Lankesh and Pansare - came to discover the Eastern India to take a break from his Project Dakshinayan and to recover the genuine Indian Spirit of democracy and diversity. He connected with and proposed to the youth of Eastern India, in four different locations of Darjeeling and Sikkim from 21-24 November 2022, the critical need in these times for a spirit of inquiry and nurturing of imagination to salvage humanity in from the clutches of artificial memory.

Salesian College Received an `A` Grade Reaccreditation Certificate on 17 September 2012 at a national award giving ceremony held at the National Accreditation and Assessment Council`s Headquarters, Bangalore. Rev. Fr Dr George Thadathil SDB, Principal of Salesian College Sonada, received the award on behalf of the institution. The Director Dr Rangarajan and the UGC Chairman Dr Ved Prakash gave away the awards to over 500 recipients on the day, Salesian College Sonada and Siliguri being the lone Salesian institution among 25 Christian colleges honoured that day with the re-accreditation certificate.

A Cultural Dance Exhibition was held in the auditorium of Salesian College Sonada (SCS), Darjeeling on Sunday 7 September, 2008. This is an annual feature and was organized by the Youth Department Ministry of the College led by the Youth Animator Rev.Fr Francis Gomes sdb.

Over 150 local residents were treated freely at the medical camp organized at Salesian College by the Lions Club of Darjeeling. The Doctors Sujit Kumar and Mohammad Abdullah came from siliguri and darjeeling respectively along with the Zonal Chairperson of the Lions, Mr Antony and president of the club Mr Sabar Agarwal.

The Bishop of Darjeeling, Rt Rev Stephen Lepcha inaugurated the 70th B.Ph (three year degree) Course at Salesian College on 9th June at 10.00 am in the college auditorium.

On Sunday 25 May 2008 at the 84th Foundation Day of the Nepali Sahitya Sammelan in Darjeeling, Fr George Thadathil sdb, the Principal of Salesian College Sonada, was awarded with a citation and shawl for his contributions towards the development of Nepali Language and Literature.

The Youth Animation Department of SCS (Salesian College, Sonada. Darjeeling) led by the Youth Animator, Fr Francis Gomes sdb organized the Annual Youth Inter-Faith Payer and Mass on 30 March, 2008. About 325 youth participated in it from 24 out of 27 youth centres managed or run by the Brothers (Philosophy students) of the College. The theme for the day was `shantilai ek mauka daeu (Give Peace a Chance)`.

There are three salesian institutions located within the Darjeeling Gorkha Autonomous Hill Council (DGAHC)area which covers the hill district of Darjeeling in West Bengal. This Autonomous Council had been created twenty years ago, after a prolonged strike (not without incidents of violence) by the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF).

The Youth Ministry Department of Salesian College Sonada (SCS), Darjeeling organized three Winter Youth Camps simultaneously at Dhajea Busty, Mollot (Balasun Valley) and Liza Hills (12 kms from Ghoom) from 6 - 8 February, 2008 for Christian boys and girls of Darjeeling Deanery.

Sonada, Wed 5 Sept.: The theatre troupe, Prerna Kala Manch(PKM), Varanasi performed two plays for the staff and students of Salesian College Sonada, Darjeeling on the occasion of Teachers` Day on 5 September, 2007 for two hours from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm. PKM under the aegis of Vishwa Jyoti Communications managed by Indian Missiological Society (IMS) Fathers was set up in 1993 and has actors from all walks of life and religion.

The 19th triennial of the Xavier Board of Education took place at Christ College, Bangalore from 21-24 May 2007 and was attended by 180 participants comprising of management representatives, principals, staff and students. The Salesians were effectively represented with the participation of twleve Confreres.

A crowd of 200 plus men and women gathered at the Sai Mandir near Chowrastha at Darjeeling on 29 April at 10.00 am. It was to honour an invitation to participate at the inter-religious fellowship organized by the Commission for Dialogue and Harmony, Diocese of Darjeeling. The day’s events were organized by the office bearers of Sai Samity, Darjeeling.

A Two day Research Scholars’ Workshop was held at Salesian College Sonada and Organized by the Xavier Board of Higher education (Darjeeling unit) from 21-22 April 2006. There were in all 18 participants including four from the host college. The event was planned by the Darjeeling unit of the All India Association of Catholic Colleges (Xavier Board) as a staff enrichment programme. In two days the scholars each in turn presented the respective research projects they are engaged with at various levels of completion and the other scholars commented upon the presentations.

The Alumni Association of Salesian College Sonada (2005 batch) organized the third major event of the year by bringing together 250 students from the local colleges and schools for a career guidance programme on 22 April 2006. Four professions were significantly chosen after preliminary consultations with students and staff of the participant institutions. The professions represented were Air Force, Army, Civil Services and Tourism and Air Travel Hospitality.

The Third Year students of Salesian College, Sonada conducted a micro research using the KABP (Knowledge Awareness Behaviour Practices) strategy in 12 villages surrounding the College. Their findings and major learnings were culled together and presented to the college community on Friday, 24 March 2006 in the presence of the staff and the PRERNA Darjeeling, a Network of NGOs represented by Passang Dorjee Lepcha who along with Mushqura Faridi (MSW, Bombay) helped the students in doing the micro research taking them through the theory of social analysis and motivating them on the need to generate awareness about the spreading disease of HIV AIDS.
