WATER CONNECTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF PRAKASH NAGAR, MAHIM
News written by: Mahesh Kumar
The first water tap of the locality was inaugurated on March 14, 2015. This is a great victory for people whose struggle started in 2008 and culminated in 2015 with getting their entitlement to water and sanitation in their slum.
Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS) started working in Prakash Nagar, Mahim in 2008. It began by providing study support classes for children and later ventured into adult literacy, SHG formation and health and sanitation activities. It was one of the neglected slums where there was no water and sanitation facility. People had no access to piped water and because there was no water supply, there were no toilets either. It was a daily drudgery for women to fetch water by crossing the railway track which was extremely fatal for them.
After studying the water issue, DBDS started organizing women to address this issue. A meeting was held with the BMC officials and an application for water connection was also submitted. The BMC officials asked for a documentary proof showing their residence prior to January 1, 1995. No one in the locality had any such proof and hence water connection was refused.
But DBDS and people of Prakash Nagar continued with their struggle and joined a bigger advocacy group of Pani Haq Samiti. The women of Prarena SHG submitted an application for water connection on the Lokshahi Din and pursued the matter with the local MLA. The unrelenting efforts of the people led the government to pass a resolution to regularize the slums formed on or before the year 2000. The new government resolution entitled people to get water connection.
