Salesian College Students Launch ‘Hertzzz’ to Promote Heart-Health Awareness

News reported by: Fr C M Paul SDB

Students of Salesian College (Autonomous), Siliguri, launched Hertzzz on World Heart Day to promote heart-health awareness. Developed by the Tech Team of RadioClub.live, the digital platform builds on the college’s earlier work in machine-learning-based heart disease prediction, shifting the focus from predicting risk to promoting preventive awareness.

Led by Radio Club General Manager Christ Minj, Hertzzz helps users reflect on everyday lifestyle habits that influence cardiovascular health. Instead of serving as a diagnostic tool, the platform offers an accessible way to understand lifestyle factors linked to heart health and encourages healthier choices.

The project follows the development of heart disease prediction software by Salesian students, which they demonstrated to Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla during his visit to the college for Rozgar Mela 2.0 in 2025. Impressed by the innovation, Shringla encouraged the students to explore possibilities for patenting the technology and developing it into a startup.

Minj, who led the earlier demonstration, said Hertzzz was conceived to take the project a step further by focusing on prevention. “Prediction can tell us about risk, but awareness can encourage people to look at the habits behind that risk. With Hertzzz, we wanted to make that reflection simple, accessible and meaningful for everyday users,” he said.

The platform enables users to examine different aspects of their lifestyle and receive a simple summary of factors linked to cardiovascular well-being. Through the initiative, the student developers hope to encourage young people to pay greater attention to preventive heart care and make conversations about healthy lifestyles more engaging.

Faculty members, including Teacher-in-Charge Wangdeep Tamang and Dinchen Tamang, witnessed the demonstration and supported the Radio Club’s student-led initiatives. Tamang stressed the importance of giving students opportunities to translate classroom learning into practical solutions.

“When students are encouraged to identify real problems and develop practical solutions, technology becomes more than a skill—it becomes a means of creating awareness and serving the community,” he said.

Dinchen Tamang highlighted the value of connecting technological innovation with everyday well-being. “The strength of such initiatives is that students are not simply learning technology; they are using it to communicate ideas that can directly benefit their community,” she said.

The launch also reflects the expanding scope of RadioClub.live, whose student projects have brought together technology, communication, environmental awareness and social engagement. Earlier initiatives such as Eco Prahari, ECOTUNES and Everrooted, along with the heart disease prediction project, have given students platforms to apply digital skills to issues of community concern and create visible local impact.

The team plans to take Hertzzz beyond the launch through campus-based health-awareness programmes, workshops and digital outreach. The focus will remain on engaging young people in conversations about cardiovascular health and preventive lifestyles.
