MUMBAI, July 2:
Mumbai Province Equips Social Communication Delegates to Strengthen Salesian Storytelling and Digital Mission
News reported by: Fr Jeswin Mastan
Twenty-nine Social Communication Delegates from across the Salesian Mumbai Province met at the Don Bosco Provincial House, Matunga, on July 1 for the Province's annual Social Communication Delegates' Meeting. The gathering focused on strengthening storytelling, ethical digital engagement, and collaborative media ministry.
The meeting began with an invocation to the Holy Spirit, followed by an inaugural address by Fr Mylin Noronha, Province Delegate for Social Communication. He outlined the gathering's objectives and presented the Province's vision, calling delegates to become effective communicators of the Salesian mission in today's rapidly evolving media landscape.
The first session, "The Salesian Storyteller: Crafting News," was conducted by Fr Joyston Machado, Bosco Information Service (BIS) In-charge for the Province. He emphasised that Bosco Information Service is more than a news platform, describing it as a living archive of the Salesian mission and a vital instrument of evangelisation. He also encouraged participants to move beyond event reporting and tell stories that communicate the impact, meaning, and transformative experiences behind every Salesian initiative.
The second session, "The Salesian Digital Playground," was led by Fr Leon Rodrigues, who presented the digital world as a contemporary missionary space where authentic presence should take precedence over self-promotion. He encouraged delegates to cultivate responsible digital practices rooted in Salesian values of simplicity, integrity, and obedience, ensuring that technology serves evangelisation, accompaniment, and pastoral outreach.
The third session on digital ethics and content discernment was conducted by Fr Nathanel George. Inviting participants to evaluate every post by asking, "Is it true? Is it good? Is it useful?", he stressed the need to verify information, use visual media responsibly, and uphold ethical standards in online communication. Through contemporary examples and interactive presentations, he reminded delegates that every digital action contributes to a lasting online witness.
The concluding technical session was led by Mr Joy Fernandes, who introduced the concept of establishing Media Cells across the Province under the theme, "Building a Stronger Salesian Presence through Storytelling, Documentation, and Digital Engagement." He explained that Media Cells would function as collaborative communication teams dedicated to documenting the life and mission of Salesian communities, preserving institutional memory, strengthening the Province's digital presence, and promoting its diverse apostolic works. These include youth ministry, parish activities, educational initiatives, social outreach, vocational programmes, and other pastoral endeavours.
The meeting concluded with regional group discussions, which enabled delegates to formulate practical strategies for strengthening communication networks within their respective regions. Participants left the gathering with renewed commitment to enhancing the Province's storytelling, digital engagement, and evangelising mission through effective and responsible communication.
