News reported by: Fr C M Paul SDB

The Salesian College Sonada–Siliguri is represented at the ongoing Acton University International Conference 2026 by two of its academic leaders, bringing the institution onto the international stage. The conference is being held at the DeVos Place Convention Centre in Grand Rapids from June 22 to 25.

Representing the Salesian educational tradition at this global forum are Fr. (Dr.) George Thadathil, former Principal of Salesian College Sonada–Siliguri, and Fr. C.M. Paul, current Vice Principal (Sciences) of Salesian College Siliguri. Their participation signals the institution’s engagement with global conversations on faith, human dignity, economics, public policy, and social ethics.

Organised by the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, Acton University is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading platforms for interdisciplinary dialogue on the human person, religion, economics, philosophy, and public life. This year’s edition has brought together nearly 900 participants from over 80 countries.

The conference offers more than 120 sessions across 15 parallel venues, covering themes from theology, philosophy, and economics to public policy, artificial intelligence, technology, and global development. For educators and thought leaders, the gathering provides a space to reflect on the moral and social dimensions of contemporary global challenges.

The presence of Fr. George Thadathil and Fr. C.M. Paul at this international forum is significant for Salesian College and the wider Salesian educational mission in India. Their participation reflects a commitment to engaging with global intellectual currents while bringing the values of the Salesian charism—human development, ethical leadership, and education rooted in faith and reason—to the discussion.

Founded in 1990 in Grand Rapids by Fr. Robert A. Sirico and Kris Alan Mauren, the Acton Institute was born from the conviction that moral principles and sound economic understanding must inform one another. Named after the English historian Lord Acton, remembered for the famous observation, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” the institute seeks to promote a free and virtuous society grounded in freedom, virtue, and human dignity.
