Marking International Women’s Day, the Theeradesa Mahila Society (TMS), in collaboration with the Fishermen Community Development Programme (FCDP) under the Salesian Province of Bangalore, organised a special programme titled “Nari Kavach” in Kollam, Kerala. The celebration, centred on the theme “Give to Gain,” highlighted women’s empowerment, resilience, and community solidarity.

The programme commenced with a prayer dance that set a reflective and celebratory tone for the gathering. Mrs Agnes John, Chairperson of FCDP, welcomed the participants, while Mrs Lacticia Martin, President of TMS, presided over the function.

The event was inaugurated by Dr Cynthia Catherine Michael, Principal of Fatima Mata National College, Kollam, who lit the ceremonial lamp. In her inaugural address, she emphasised that no field is beyond women's reach and noted that confidence and courage remain their greatest strengths.

A significant highlight of the programme was the presentation of the Nari Shakti Award to Shifna Mariam, who has achieved remarkable accomplishments in the fields of arts and education despite being visually impaired. The organisers also honoured coastal women Annie Joseph, Sarala Das, and Geetha Yesudas, recognising their perseverance in overcoming life’s challenges and building sustainable livelihoods through determination and hard work.

As part of the initiative to promote self-reliance among coastal women, eight deserving community members received sewing machines from FCDP. The machines were distributed by Sister Annie Joseph, encouraging the recipients to pursue income-generating activities.

Mrs Vincy Biju, Chairperson of the Welfare Standing Committee of Kollam Corporation, extended her felicitations and praised the efforts of organisations working to empower coastal women.

The programme also included a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training session conducted by the Bishop Benziger College of Nursing, equipping participants with essential life-saving skills for emergencies. This was followed by a self-defence training session organised by the Kollam Police Women’s Cell, which helped women build confidence and learn practical techniques for personal safety.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Sister Mary Scaria, Assistant Director of TMS. The celebration concluded with vibrant cultural programmes presented by the participants.

The Nari Kavach Women’s Day celebration served as a meaningful platform to strengthen women’s confidence and security, inspiring them with renewed motivation to face life’s challenges with courage and determination.
