The AMRAT Network (Gujarat Region) observed the International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking with a large-scale awareness programme at the Pastoral Centre, Nadiad, drawing 180 participants in a united stand against modern-day slavery. The gathering included 30 religious sisters and 150 women and youth, reflecting a strong community response to the urgent call for vigilance and action against human trafficking.

The programme began with a solemn candlelight procession, symbolizing solidarity with victims of trafficking and hope for their freedom and restoration of dignity. The prayerful tribute set the tone for the day’s proceedings.

Sr. Elphina Rodrigues, FMA, Secretary of AMRAT Gujarat, introduced the agenda, outlining the observance's objectives. Sr. Manju Tuscano, Coordinator for the Gujarat Region, formally welcomed the participants, emphasizing the importance of grassroots awareness in combating trafficking.

Sr. Beena Thomas, AMRAT Executive, presented a comprehensive overview of the AMRAT Network’s vision and mission. She highlighted the significance of marking the International Day as part of a global movement to eradicate human trafficking and defend human dignity.

A key highlight of the programme was an expert session by Fr. Joseph Appavo, a lawyer and prominent resource person. He offered an in-depth analysis of the organized “mafia” networks driving trafficking operations, explaining how such crimes manifest within local contexts. Fr. Appavo also outlined practical strategies to help network members identify suspicious activities and intervene responsibly within their neighbourhoods.

Using posters and banners, Sr. Manju Tuscano simplified complex aspects of trafficking, explaining its various forms with relatable examples. Special attention was given to regional threats, including the growing concern over surrogacy-related trafficking.

The youth added a powerful dimension to the programme through a dramatic skit portraying the deceptive tactics traffickers use to lure vulnerable individuals. By presenting real-life scenarios, the performance enabled participants to recognize hidden dangers that often go unnoticed in everyday life.

The event concluded with a collective Oath-Taking Ceremony. All participants pledged to say “No to Trafficking” and “Yes to Human Dignity,” reaffirming their commitment to act as vigilant defenders of human rights.

Feedback from both resource persons and participants was overwhelmingly positive. Organizers described the day as highly fruitful, noting that the programme successfully moved attendees from awareness to action. “The strength of our network lies in our collective vigilance. Today, we have moved from mere awareness to a committed call for action,” the organizers stated.
