Rector Major Fr. Fabio Attard released a commemorative Bengali volume at the conclusion of the Salesian Centenary celebrations held in Kolkata. The book offers readers a comprehensive history of one of the most influential Catholic missionary journeys across eastern India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Titled History of the Kolkata Salesian Province, the 290-page work by Bengali Salesian Fr. Soroj Mullick has been published by Salesian College Publications, Sonada. It brings Bengali-speaking readers a continuous, research-based narrative of 100 years of the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Kolkata Province.

The book traces the Province’s journey from fragile beginnings in the 1920s to its present-day network of schools, parishes, youth centres, and social initiatives across West Bengal, Tripura, and Bangladesh. Drawing on archival records, provincial chronicles, parish registers, interviews, and photo collections, the volume combines scholarly rigour with vivid anecdotes, personalities, and turning points.

In his preface, Fr. Mullick presents history as a dialogue between past and present, describing the centenary as a “jubilee of renewal”—a moment to recognize grace, confront failures honestly, and take shared responsibility for the future.

Structured in 10 chapters with five appendices and illustrated with 30 rare photographs, the book is deliberately written for a wide Bengali readership. It seeks to reach not only Salesians but also lay collaborators, teachers, catechists, community leaders, and former students who have encountered Don Bosco institutions without knowing their full story.

Priced at Rs. 400, the first edition is positioned for institutional libraries, parish bookstalls, and individual readers in India and abroad. The dedication reflects its spirit: offered to all who share in the Salesian educative mission in the Kolkata Province and to communities touched by its century-long presence.

The history of the Kolkata Salesian Province invites readers to look beyond familiar school façades and well-known names, to the deeper narrative of faith, sacrifice, cultural encounter, and perseverance that shaped a century of Salesian presence in Bengal and beyond.
