Don Bosco 'School on Wheels' Brings Education to Rural Gujarat
In a heartwarming initiative that blends innovation with compassion, Don Bosco Narukot has launched the "School on Wheels" program—locally known as "પૈડાની પાઠશાલા" (Paydani Patshala)—to bring quality education directly to children in remote villages of Gujarat.
Conceived by Fr Elson Barretto SDB, the rector of Don Bosco Narukot, the initiative began in June and has already made a significant impact across 26 villages, including 24 in the Jambuguda district and 2 in Halol. The program is a collaborative effort led by the Disciples of Jesus (DJS) congregation, the Salesians, and the Don Bosco Narukot development team.
At the forefront of this mobile education mission are Sr Johani Soreng and Sr Madhuri Baa of the DJS congregation. Every weekday from 8:30 am to 11 am, they travel with a vehicle packed with educational materials, bringing learning to the doorsteps of children who would otherwise be left behind. Their work goes beyond academics—they foster community spirit and instill values of social responsibility.
The "School on Wheels" is more than a classroom on wheels; it’s a beacon of hope. By reaching out to the most underserved communities, the initiative empowers children with the tools to improve their socio-economic conditions and grow into responsible citizens. It embodies the philosophy of Don Bosco: “For you I study, for you I work, for you I live, for you I am willing even to give my life.”
This initiative stands as a model for inclusive and transformative education. It showcases how dedication and creativity can overcome barriers of geography and poverty. The selfless service of Sr Johani, Sr Madhuri, and the entire Don Bosco Narukot community is a powerful reminder of the change that committed individuals can bring.
As the "School on Wheels" continues to roll forward, it carries with it the dreams of countless children and the promise of a brighter, more equitable future.
