Don Bosco Marks Over Three Decades of Transformative Mission in Nepal
As the global Salesian Family commemorates 150 years of the First Missionary Expedition sent by Don Bosco in 1875, the legacy of that historic journey continues to flourish across continents — including Nepal, where the Salesians have been serving young people for over three decades. What began as a small mission in Dharan in 1992 has today grown into a lifeline of education, skills training and hope for thousands of Nepali youth.
The mission formally took shape with the establishment of the Nepal Don Bosco Society in 1996, which was later affiliated with the Social Welfare Council. A major milestone was reached in 2002 with the founding of Nepal Don Bosco School in Siddhipur, Lalitpur, introducing an education model rooted in Don Bosco’s Preventive System of reason, religion, and loving kindness.
Since then, Salesian schools and vocational centres across Nepal have become hubs of transformation. Technical training in trades such as electrical work, mechanics, carpentry and computer science has opened doors of opportunity for disadvantaged young people, enabling them to step confidently into the workforce.
The Salesians also played a crucial role in rebuilding communities after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Through relief initiatives and the “Future Helpers” programme, they not only reconstructed damaged schools but also trained hundreds of youth in construction skills—turning a tragedy into an opportunity for empowerment.
Expanding into new regions like Chhinchu and Biratnagar, recent projects such as the school bus initiative now help children from remote areas access education safely. Support from global Salesian networks and local benefactors continues to strengthen this mission of service.
As Nepal navigates new social and economic challenges, the Don Bosco Fathers remain steadfast in their commitment: to educate, accompany, and uplift the young. Their presence stands as a living extension of Don Bosco’s missionary dream—a belief that shaping the life of a child is shaping the future of a nation.

Directed, Edited & Filmed by Rev. Fr. Bastin SDB Salesian work in Nepal focuses on education and emergency relief, particularly for youth, through institutions like technical and academic schools, community centers, and various social programs. Following the 2015 earthquakes, the Salesians significantly contributed to reconstruction, including building new schools and providing temporary learning centers. Their efforts also include teacher training, emergency assistance like food and medical aid during disasters, and programs for skills development and spiritual guidance.
