Youth Gather for Retreat Ahead of Carlo Acutis’ Canonization
More than 250 young people from the dioceses of Shillong, Jowai, and Nongstoin gathered on September 6 for a day-long retreat at the Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shillong, in preparation for the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis.
Participants received retreat kits that included a T-shirt, notebook, pen, and a Carlo Acutis prayer card. The day began with lively action songs, dances, and activities led by Brother Quirinus Warkhyllew, creating a spirit of unity and joy.
The first session, “Wired for God”, was delivered by Father Michael Makri, Director of Don Bosco Youth Centre and chief organizer of the event. He recounted the inspiring life of Carlo Acutis, the 15-year-old Italian teenager known for his deep love for the Eucharist and his creative use of computer skills to document Eucharistic miracles online. Father Makri urged participants to reflect on their use of technology and to follow Carlo’s example of using digital media for good. A video presentation of Carlo’s website on Eucharistic miracles left a strong impression on the audience.
The Holy Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong, who highlighted seven virtues of Carlo for the youth to emulate: devotion to the Eucharist, love for Mary, simplicity, joy, charity, purity, and creative evangelization through technology.
Adding a hands-on element, the Don Bosco Media Network Television (dbmnTv) facilitated “Create Like Carlo”, where participants designed digital faith messages through posters, reels, and skits. Their creations drew appreciation from fellow youth.
In the concluding session, “Saints Wear Sneakers”, Father George Shining reminded the participants that sainthood is attainable in today’s world. The retreat concluded with a commitment prayer, in which the young people pledged to strive to “be saints like Carlo.”
