Don Bosco Tech Explores Indo-German Partnership to Strengthen Vocational Training

Don Bosco Tech Society, India, has begun discussions with Germany's Handwerkskammer Erfurt on a strategic partnership to enhance vocational education, trainer development, and apprenticeship opportunities for Indian youth.

The discussions took place during Fr. George Mathew’s recent visit to Europe, during which he met Thomas Malcharek, the Chief Executive Officer of Handwerkskammer Erfurt. Svetlana Myagkova and Magdalena Szypa from Handwerkskammer Erfurt, along with Chirag Bansal and Prachi Bansal of BillionTalent, also attended the meeting and facilitated the interaction.

The proposed collaboration focuses on strengthening trainer capacity across Don Bosco Tech institutions by drawing on Germany's renowned dual-vocational education system, which integrates classroom learning with structured industry-based apprenticeships. The partners also discussed creating pathways for Indian candidates to access apprenticeship opportunities in Germany.

Handwerkskammer Erfurt, the Chamber of Skilled Crafts for Thuringia, represents nearly 14,000 member enterprises and oversees vocational education, apprenticeship programmes, certification, and continuing professional training. Its industry-linked expertise is expected to offer insights for upgrading vocational training in India.

During the meeting, Fr. George Mathew presented Don Bosco Tech's nationwide skilling ecosystem, which serves thousands of young people through more than 100 training centres across India. He highlighted the organisation's integrated approach, combining technical skills, life skills, placement support, and post-placement mentoring, while emphasising the need to strengthen trainers' capacity.

Malcharek expressed Handwerkskammer Erfurt's willingness to support Don Bosco Tech's trainer development initiatives and explore avenues for sharing German best practices in skilled crafts, apprenticeship models, and industry engagement.

Both organisations agreed that a delegation from Handwerkskammer Erfurt would visit Don Bosco Tech institutions in India to identify concrete areas of collaboration and develop a framework for future partnership.

The proposed Indo-German collaboration is expected to enhance the quality of vocational education, strengthen industry linkages, expand global employment opportunities for Indian youth, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and reinforce Don Bosco Tech's commitment to international cooperation in skill development.
