Don Bosco College of Agriculture Produces Organic Jaggery

News written by: Fr Francis Xavier
Don Bosco College of Agriculture (DBCA), Sulcorna, has successfully produced 150 kgs. of chemical-free organic jaggery from sugarcane grown on campus using only organic manure and pesticides.
Jaggery production, especially chemical-free jaggery, has better value addition to sugarcane farmers. Jaggery from one ton of sugarcane can fetch more income for the farmer than the sale of raw sugarcane to the factories, said Dr Kunkalikar, Principal of DBCA. The sugarcane growers look at it as an opportunity to earn more income. We have produced about 150 kgs. of jaggery on a single day and are selling it for rupees 120 per kilogram, he added. DBCA is willing to help sugarcane growers and farmers from Goa to produce jaggery and share with them the technology and install small commercial units of jaggery production on invitation, said Dr Kunkalikar. The college plans to expand jaggery production to help farmers and sugarcane growers as part of the ongoing programme, `Swayampurna Goa`.
