Bro. Shaji Kalavanal Laid to Rest

The funeral of Bro. Shaji Kalavanal SDB took place at Don Bosco Bhavan, Mannuthy, on 20 August 2013. The funeral liturgy lasted from 10.30 am to 01.30 pm.
The body of Bro. Shaji was received at Don Bosco, Aluva, at 5.35 am on 20 August 2013. Confreres of Don Bosco, Aluva, and some from the neighbouring Salesian communities along with the parents and relatives of Bro. Shaji were present. After laying the body in the chapel of the Senior Salesians` Home, the first part of the funeral rites for religious according to the Syro-Malabar Rite in Malayalam was led by Fr. K.O. Thomas SDB, Vice-Provincial. At 6.00 am, a concelebrated Eucharist presided over by Mar Thomas Chakiath, Former Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly was offered, at which the Religious from the neighbourhood and some parishioners too participated. By 8.00 am the body was taken to Don Bosco Bhavan, Mannuthy, for the final rites. On reaching Mannuthy, the body was laid in the chapel of Don Bosco Bhavan. Priest confreres led the Office for the Dead till the Mass began at 10.30 am. Fr. Jibi Thomas Parekulath presented the curricum vitae of the departed. The solemn funeral Mass presided by Fr. Thomas Anchukandam, Provincial, was concelebrated by about 100 priests. Besides relatives and neighbours, students and staff members from the institutions where Bro. Shaji had served came in large numbers, making the participation one of the largest in the recent past. Fr. Alex Kalathikattil, Rector of Don Bosco, Aluva, preached the homily. During the funeral rites after the Mass, all the participants paid floral tributes to Bro. Shaji. In the funeral procession, novitiate companions of Bro. Shaji carried the body to the door of the church and handed it over to the relatives. In the cemetery, Fr. Jiji Kalavanal SDB, a cousin of the departed, bid goodbye on behalf the relatives. Fr. Provincial did so on behalf of the province and Fr. Kapplikunnel Mathew, Rector of Don Bosco Bhavan, Mannuthy, thanked everyone. Fr. Provincial lauded Bro. Shaji`s exactness and duty consciousness while serving in responsible positions in academic institutions. His example as a good Salesian Brother was also highlighted. Before closing the coffin, all had a chance to pay last respects by placing incense in the coffin. After the relatives too bade goodbye the body was placed in the tomb.
