Karunapuram Philosophate, Hosts Debate on Technology and Human Values

Vishwa Jyothi Don Bosco College, Karunapuram, organised a debate on the theme “Technology makes us more human: By extending our capacity to know, love and serve” on Sept. 18, bringing together college students and members of nearby religious communities.

Fr Suman Goli, Principal of Vishwa Jyothi Don Bosco College, welcomed the gathering and Fr Chandra Mohan SDB moderated the debate. Fr Kommu Naveen of the Diocese of Khammam and Sr Florence of the FMA community served as judges.

Br Kevinnash Phawa and Br Deepak Parichha spoke in favour of the motion, while Br Wilfred Thyrniang and Br Westerfield Kharmawphlang argued against it. Rather than disputing the usefulness of technology, the speakers examined its impact on human relationships, values and capacities. Both sides presented arguments supported by examples and research, focusing on whether technology strengthens human potential or risks creating excessive dependence. Participants and audience members engaged with the speakers through questions and responses, with Fr Chandra Mohan moderating the session.

The final round featured rebuttal speeches by Br Ganamal Vijay Kumar, who represented the motion, and Br Chukka Sumanth, who opposed it. The speakers highlighted, respectively, technology’s potential to expand human capabilities and the risks associated with overdependence on technological tools.

In his concluding remarks, Fr Chandra Mohan emphasised that the value of a debate lies not merely in determining a winning side but in encouraging participants to remain open to truth and engage respectfully with differing perspectives.

The debate provided a platform for critical reflection on technology, encouraging the college community to consider how technological advancement can be balanced with human values, responsible engagement and meaningful relationships.
