‘Emmaus Journey’ Catechetical Course Deepens Scriptural Faith in Trichy

Christodayam, the Catechetical Department of the Salesian Province of Trichy, concluded its third and final Catechetical Certificate Course of the year, titled “Emmaus Journey,” at Asir Bhavan, Perumalmalai, Kodaikanal, on August 9.
From August 7 to 9, the three-day formation programme, under the theme “Ignorance is not bliss! Know Scripture – Know Jesus,” brought together 36 catechism teachers and young people from the Trichy Zone for faith formation, biblical learning, and spiritual renewal.
Participants came from the parishes of Amsam, Manakkal and Madhakotai, along with students from Namakkal School. Together, they joined a programme that formed part of Christodayam’s provincial outreach to strengthen catechetical ministry and promote New Evangelisation across the Salesian Province of Trichy.
The course sought to help both experienced catechists and young participants overcome spiritual fatigue and rediscover Christ through a deeper engagement with Sacred Scripture. To highlight this impact, the formation employed interactive biblical reflections, prayerful silence, personal sharing and group discussions rather than relying primarily on conventional lectures, enabling participants to relate their life experiences and challenges to the message of Scripture.
The sessions were facilitated by a resource team from Koinonia John the Baptist (KJB) comprising Fr Thiyagu Michael Raj, Mr Jerald Rozario and Br Rathin Jacob. Their methodology emphasised an experiential encounter with the Word of God, encouraging participants to move from merely knowing Scripture to recognising Christ’s presence in their lives and ministry.
The programme reached its spiritual culmination with a solemn celebration of the breaking of the Bread, recalling the disciples’ recognition of the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus.
Participants expressed appreciation for the programme, highlighting its impact in renewing their commitment to parish ministry and deepening their interest in biblical study. Their positive response also highlighted the effectiveness of the New Evangelisation approach adopted during the course.
