Forest-Fringed Don Bosco Schools Embrace Future Learning Through AI STEAM Workshop

News reported by: Fr C M Paul SDB

In a campus nestled on the edge of a forest reserve, classrooms came alive with the hum of drones, blinking sensors, and curious young minds as Don Bosco schools in Narukot hosted an intensive AI STEAM experiential learning workshop in mid-February.

The three-day programme, held from 11 to 13 February 2026, brought together more than 700 students, parents, and teachers from Don Bosco English Medium School and Don Bosco Piloo Modi High School. Conducted in collaboration with International S.T.E.A.M Research (ISR), the workshop introduced participants to artificial intelligence, coding, robotics, drones, Internet of Things (IoT), and extended reality technologies, including AR, VR, and MR.

Blending conceptual inputs with hands-on activities, the sessions enabled learners to move quickly from curiosity to confident experimentation. Students coded robots, flew drones, and explored sensor-based applications, demonstrating how advanced technology education can thrive even in geographically remote settings.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Rector, Fr. Elson Baretto, who described the programme as a long-cherished vision. “Empowering our students to be future-ready through experiential education using futuristic technologies in our AI STEAM Lab is a dream come true,” he said.

Principal Fr. Daresh underscored the school's broader educational mission. “We want Don Bosco Narukot to become a benchmark for holistic education in Panchmahal district, ensuring that no child is left behind in a technology-driven future,” he noted.

Teachers and parents actively participated alongside students, many encountering advanced technologies for the first time. Science teacher Anita Parmar termed the experience “eye-opening,” adding that robotics and coding offer powerful ways to make science engaging and relevant in everyday classroom teaching.

Students echoed the enthusiasm. “I had only read about drones in textbooks,” said Rohan, a Class IX student. “Flying one myself and coding its movements made me feel that the future is in my hands.”

With students from Gujarati- and English-medium streams learning together, the workshop also highlighted that language is no barrier when education is hands-on and culturally responsive. Building on the programme's success, the Don Bosco institutions plan to integrate STEAM learning into their regular curriculum and establish a permanent AI STEAM Lab with ISR’s continued support—marking a significant step toward bringing future-focused education to rural India.
