New Priests’ Day Celebrated with Prayer, Fellowship, and Missionary Zeal in Guwahati

The Salesian Province of Mary Help of Christians, Guwahati, marked New Priests’ Day with joy and gratitude on Saturday, 7 February, at Mario Hall, Provincial House, Panbazar. The celebration brought together Salesian confreres, local communities, and well-wishers to thank God for the gift of new priestly vocations bestowed upon the Province.
The day’s central moment was the solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist, which set a deeply prayerful and fraternal tone. This year’s liturgy featured a rare and touching gesture: a deacon, scheduled to be ordained on 14 April, proclaimed the Gospel after being blessed by his own companion. The symbolic act—one companion blessing another—stood as a powerful sign of brotherhood, shared vocation, and mutual support within the Salesian family.
During the felicitation of the newly ordained priests, the Provincial, Fr. Sebastian Kuricheal, SDB, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the graces received by the Province. He described the new priests as a clear sign of God’s blessings and reminded them that ordination completes one stage of formation but inaugurates a lifelong journey of self-formation. “Community life and the people you serve will continue to shape you,” he said, encouraging the priests to trust the Lord as their daily guide.
Fr. Kuricheal outlined three guiding principles for priestly life: fostering communion among consecrated priests, valuing and nurturing community life, and embracing the missionary call—especially in service to the young—with humility and freedom from ego. He urged fidelity to entrusted responsibilities and encouraged the priests to be visible signs of Christ’s love, carrying out their mission with joy and deep union with God.
As part of their missionary formation, the newly ordained priests have been appointed Assistant Parish Priests to gain essential pastoral experience. The celebration concluded with a felicitation programme featuring messages, a congratulatory song, expressions of gratitude, and a fraternal meal, underscoring the spirit of unity and thanksgiving that marked the day.
