His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, kindly welcomed Fr. Vincent Bosco, SDB, Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Jerusalem Campus of the Salesian Pontifical University, who visited to convey heartfelt thanks for His Beatitude’s benevolent presence and blessing at the presentation of his book on 29 November 2025. He was accompanied by Ms. Maria Ruiz, a consecrated member of the Ordo Virginum and iconographer of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The encounter was also honoured by the presence of Archimandrite Christodoulos, archivist of the Patriarchal Archives in Jerusalem.

During the fraternal encounter, His Beatitude shared profound theological reflections. He emphasized that theology is not the invention of new ideas, but a humble participation in the mystery of God. Using the contrast between the Greek notions of invention (epinóesis) and to go around or journey around (perilthon), he explained that the Fathers of the Church did not presume to invent theology, nor did they attempt to confine the essence of God (ousia) within the limits of human language. Rather, they walked reverently around the mystery, contemplating it with faith, humility, and fidelity, and articulating what had already been lived and revealed in the life of faith. Thus, theology is not a human construction, but a grace-filled contemplation received, safeguarded, and handed down by the Church Fathers.

His Beatitude also reflected on contemporary concerns surrounding Artificial Intelligence. While acknowledging its usefulness, he cautioned that reliance solely upon technological intelligence risks diminishing the spiritual intelligence illumined by the Holy Spirit. Authentic Christian discernment, he affirmed, remains inseparable from grace and interior illumination.

The conversation also touched upon Theodore Abū Qurrah and the important contribution of the Arabic Fathers of the Church, affirming the richness of the Christian intellectual and spiritual tradition of the region. As a sign of esteem and fraternal encouragement, His Beatitude presented Fr. Vincent Bosco with a personally signed volume on the History of the Church in Jerusalem (Ἱστορία τῆς Ἐκκλησίας Ἱεροσολύμων, 2010) and the New Testament (in Arabic language). The encounter unfolded in a warm and dignified atmosphere with the priest singing in Arabic and Greek languages, and the conversation took place in English, Arabic, and Greek, reflecting the spiritual and cultural breadth of Jerusalem. Marking the conclusion of the year 2025 with such personal and fraternal sharing within the Church is truly a blessing.
