St. Anthony’s College Hosts Convocation Ceremony; Honours Rank Holders and Ph.D. Awardees
St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, held its Convocation Ceremony on Tuesday, honouring 146 rank holders and five doctoral awardees in a celebration that combined academic distinction with the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya.
The ceremony opened with a convocation march led by Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh, an alumnus of the College, alongside faculty heads, rank holders, and Ph.D. awardees. The procession was marked by traditional Garo Ongrima and Khasi Shadwait rhythms, setting the tone for the day’s proceedings.
Lyngdoh, chief guest for the occasion, recalled his student years fondly and urged graduates to embrace humility, empathy, and intellectual curiosity. Quoting W.B. Yeats, he said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire,” emphasizing the importance of listening, kindness, and grounded leadership.
A highlight of the event was the launch of the Goodness Award – Where Values Meet Leadership, instituted by the Department of Value Education. The inaugural award was presented to Elizabeth Hazel Lyndem, Student Coordinator, for her integrity, grace, and empathetic leadership.
Students from 23 departments were honoured for securing top ranks in NEHU examinations, with notable performances in Commerce, Economics, Education, Mass Media, Fishery Science, Chemistry, Geology, and Statistics. The Archbishop Hubert D’Rosario Award for highest marks went to Somiyur Shaiza of Geology (94.5%), while Md. Rezaul Islam of Political Science was named Valedictorian for his academic excellence and community leadership.
The College also recognized four faculty members who recently completed doctoral studies and three others for 25 years of dedicated service, underscoring its commitment to academic excellence and values-driven education rooted in the Don Bosco tradition.
