News reported by: Michael Makri (INS)

Baijalbari witnessed a moment of profound spiritual significance on January 14 with the solemn blessing of the parish church of St. John Paul II Parish by Most Rev. Bishop Lumen Monteiro CSC, DD, Bishop of the Diocese of Agartala. The sacred ceremony marked an important milestone in the life of the parish community and was celebrated in an atmosphere of deep faith, joy, and thanksgiving.

The occasion was graced by the presence of several eminent Church leaders, including Fr. John Zosiama SDB, Provincial of the Shillong Province, Fr. K. J. Abraham CSC, Holy Cross Provincial of the North East Region, and Fr. Paul Panachikkal SDB, Parish Priest of Baijalbari. A large gathering of priests, religious sisters, and lay faithful from Baijalbari and neighbouring parishes participated in the celebration, reflecting the unity and vibrant faith of the local Church.

In his homily, Bishop Lumen Monteiro underlined the significance of a parish church as a living house of God. While the church building is constructed of stone, he noted, the true Church is formed by the faith, unity, and love of its people. Drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of St. John Paul II, the Bishop encouraged the faithful to emulate his courage, compassion, and steadfast faith. He also expressed appreciation and congratulations to Fr. Paul Panachikkal and the parish community for their dedication to building a beautiful and dignified place of worship.

Following the Holy Eucharist and the blessing of the church, a felicitation programme was held at the Don Bosco School Auditorium. The programme featured colourful cultural performances and traditional expressions of welcome. The dignitaries were honoured with traditional Risas, symbolising the region's rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. Mementoes were also presented to the dignitaries, as well as to Fr. Paul Panachikkal’s companions and family members, in gratitude for their support and contribution to the growth of the parish.
