Don Bosco’s Nine-Year-Old Dream Inspires New Scholarly Volume
A formative childhood dream that shaped the life and mission of Saint John Bosco has been given renewed scholarly attention in a newly released volume, From a Dream to Legacy. The book was launched by Father Silvio Roggia, General Councillor for Formation, during the South Asia Formation Commission meeting held at Don Bosco Provincial House, Odxel, Goa, from July 31 to August 4.
Edited by Father Jacob Palaparambil, the publication is the fruit of the annual seminar organized by Divyadaan, Salesian Institute of Philosophy, Nashik. It compiles research and reflections on Don Bosco’s “dream at nine,” regarded as a pivotal moment in his life and the foundation of the Preventive System of education—a pedagogy rooted in reason, love, and spiritual guidance.
The interdisciplinary work draws insights from scripture, theology, ethics, psychology, and pedagogy, while also exploring the historical backdrop of the dream. Contributors examine its enduring significance for leadership, formation, and peacebuilding, offering it as a lens to address contemporary challenges, particularly in the education and empowerment of marginalized youth.
The book underscores the dream’s transformative power, portraying it as both a personal turning point for Don Bosco and a blueprint for the Salesian mission today. The seminar and its resulting volume reflect Divyadaan’s commitment to combining academic rigour with pastoral relevance, annually selecting themes of historical depth and present-day urgency.
