Salesian Pedagogy Workshop Draws Educators from Across the Province in Goa
News reported by: Francis Xavier
A two-day seminar–cum–workshop on Salesian Pedagogy was held on February 19–20 at the Don Bosco Provincial House, Odxel, Goa, bringing together 48 participants comprising priests, brothers, sisters, collaborators, and teachers from various Don Bosco institutions across the Province. The programme aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of Don Bosco’s educational vision and to strengthen their commitment to the Salesian mission in contemporary educational settings.
The workshop was animated by two eminent resource persons—Father John Parankimalil, Secretary of SPCSA, AIDBES, and Coordinator of Education and Culture for South Asia, and Father Banzelao Teixeira, Vice Provincial of the Salesian Province of Panjim. Through interactive, reflective sessions, the facilitators guided participants in rediscovering the core principles of Salesian education.
The programme began with a prayer service led by Sister Melissa D’Souza, followed by a welcome address by Father Joel D’Souza, Rector of the Provincial House, who greeted the participants and felicitated the dignitaries. Father Clive Telles, Provincial of INP, delivered the inaugural address, offering an orientation on Don Bosco’s pedagogy and encouraging active participation throughout the workshop.
As the chief resource person, Father Parankimalil led sessions on the Salesian Preventive System, the pedagogy of presence, and accompaniment. He underscored that teaching is a vocation and a privilege rather than merely an occupation, drawing on incidents from Don Bosco’s life and testimonies from his former pupils. Father Teixeira supplemented these sessions with insights into Don Bosco’s approach to guiding and forming young people. The learning process was enriched through quizzes, group work, creative exercises, and short film clips, ensuring sustained engagement.
On the concluding day, Father Tamatur Cardozo, Head of the Education Commission, INP, delivered the valedictory message. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Father Infancio Pires and the distribution of certificates.
Participants expressed appreciation for the workshop’s practical, empathetic, and engaging approach, noting that it offered valuable insights into educator–student relationships and renewed their enthusiasm to carry forward the Salesian educational mission.
