Don Bosco Kick-starts ‘Sports for Change’ in Kerala
In a bold move to harness the power of sports for youth development, Don Bosco institutions, in partnership with Jugend Eine Welt (JEW), BREADS Bangalore, and the Oommen Chandy Foundation, officially launched the ‘Sports for Change’ initiative in Kerala. The inaugural ceremony occurred at Don Bosco Schools, Puthuppally, Kottayam, and was presided over by the Honourable Governor of Maharashtra, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan.
The Governor, a long-distance runner, formally inaugurated the three-year project and highlighted its significance in steering young people away from destructive habits. “We need sports to keep you fit, to free you from all evil attractions of society,” he remarked, endorsing the initiative’s anti-drug campaign.
The ‘Sports for Change’ programme is set to benefit over 1,700 children across seven Community Sports Hubs in Kerala. It offers free professional football coaching, life skills training, and a structured awareness campaign to build a healthier, more responsible generation.
The event opened with a vibrant welcome dance by Don Bosco students, followed by a multimedia presentation detailing the objectives of the Don Bosco Community Sports Hub (DBCSH) project.
Shri Chandy Oommen, MLA of Puthuppally, delivered a powerful keynote address, stressing the role of sports in shaping confident and capable youth. Fr. Jitto Kunnath SDB, Assistant Director of BREADS Bangalore, delivered the presidential address.
A symbolic highlight of the event was the official jersey presentation to representatives from the six partner hubs: Meenadam, Ayarkunnam, Kooropada, Manarkad, Kurichy, and Puthuppally.
Fr. Devassy Chirakel SDB, Rector of Don Bosco Puthuppally, honoured Governor Radhakrishnan with a commemorative memento. Mementos were also presented to Shri Chandy Oommen and acclaimed film director and writer Mr. Akhil Marar, recognizing their support and presence at the event.
