Deacons Ian and Nigel Pinto ordained priests for Panjim Province

21 December 2023
- Francis Xavier

Deacon Ian Pinto and Deacon Nigel Pinto of the Salesian Province of Panjim-Konkan were ordained priests of God during the solemn eucharistic celebration by Archbishop of Goa and Daman, Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Don Bosco Panjim on December 16.

Instructing the deacons, Archbishop, Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão called on them to imitate the Saint of Goa, Saint Francis Xavier who tirelessly worked for the salvation of souls. He exhorted them to walk in the footsteps of their father and founder Saint John Bosco and the patron saint of the province Saint Joseph Vaz in serving the young especially the poor and the less fortunate.  Quoting the Bible Cardinal Ferrao said, “Your enthusiastic service of joy should enter in the service of Jesus which you are called to carry on.  Jesus cared for the people specially those who were neglected, marginalised and on the periphery of society.  The service rendered by Jesus is a caring service with tenderness without looking at the response of those who He served.  Jesus did not create disparity in His service of the people, if he or she was a Jew or not or of any other background.  Jesus washed the feet of His disciples though He knew they would abandon Him, His service was true and unconditional.  This is what I ask of you and wish for you as you embark on your journey to serve Jesus in those who will be entrusted to you”, said Archbishop, Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão.

Deacon Ian Pinto’s motto is taken from the Gospel of Luke 1:35, ‘Overshadowed by the Spirit, Bearing Christ to all’.  Born and brought up in the city of Panjim, Goa, in the parish of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, he is the eldest of the five siblings in the family of Joseph and Susanna Pinto.  Deacon Ian Pinto found his calling to priesthood as an active member of the Friends of Saint Dominic Savio at Panjim.

Deacon Nigel Pinto’s motto for ordination is taken from the Book of Psalms 139, ‘Lord that I may see your presence in every experience’.  A resident of Santa Cruz, Goa, Deacon Nigel Pinto is the younger sibling with an elder sister and parents Freda and Godfrey Pinto.  After completing his primary education at the Rosary High School, Miramar, he joined Don Bosco Panjim in the 7th Standard. He first felt the divine calling to the Priesthood during a retreat at Potta, Kerala, when the retreat preacher called out his name and read out the following message, ‘You are precious to me, come and live with me’. To further discern his vocation to the Priesthood, he joined the Friends of Dominic Savio in Don Bosco Panjim, a group led by the then Principal, Father Edwin Baracho.

Provincial, Father Clive Telles thanked the parents of Father Ian Pinto and Father Nigel Pinto for giving their sons to serve the Lord as Salesian priests in the province of Panjim-Konkan.
